Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
Move location this weekend to small mixed farm that was last year devoid of coneys just shows how quickly numbers can become too high and with new trees and young crops trying to grow. This farm has is alot short hedges that has avoided the dreaded hedge grubbing of the war effort. All buries are rooted up so we used our team of five jills as they seem more skilled at getting over the coneys in a rooted stop end and turning and bolting the coney. We mostly use hobs so this has given a good work out . Longnets in use we to mop up the escaped coneys a great day but the weather is just too warm for january I was in a T shirt . HAppy hunting ATB Cookie Quote Link to post

People are interested, and happy, to learn / know how many bunnies you are catching, good for you, you have done well The issue was with looking down on / taking the piss out of / belittleing folk who catch less etc. Like i said mate, well done Looks like a very good day, especially if as you say the farm was dead last season, you must have a large resident rabbit population in the locality, for them to have moved in like that. With us, it tends to be that once we have an area, we then get all the surrounding land, then once we have killed thearea, and then all of that which surrounds it , it stays dead, season after season. Especially seeing as we now have bad mixy etc every year. Which is of course great if you are the farmer, but not so great for us. As for it not being a numbers game, i'd still have gone walk about to put rabbit number 50 in the bag, but that's mainly cos i'm a bit autistic atb mate Quote Link to post

Back to ferretting we have a couple of large tracts of land surrounding our perms that have not had anybody shooting/hunting for 50 years a total no go area which to be honest is a great thing as it help to feed our ajoining farms with rabbits and pigeons as its a haven for them . Is the numbers genrally low down your way as we do have alot of gangs up from bristol.wales seeking permissions. ATB Cookie Quote Link to post

Having such spots that will replenish your land in this day and age is a rare thing, due to both hunting pressure and land use. To be honest mate wales etc is a funny place. There are some good areas with a decent head of game. However there are also a lot of areas with next to no game, and yet still a huge number of people that own running dogs, ferrets, shoot etc. Such a place is the 'Welsh Valleys' area. There are more running dogs there than i have seen anywhere else. As a result there are a lot of folk out looking for places to hunt, and numbers dwindle, poaching is rife, and land owners are put off people using dogs etc due to bad experiances. There are a lot of lads with FAC's. I once read my county was the most heavily hunted in the U.K. We have also had mixy bad every year. and VHD. All in all it's not great. I have a lot of land, but the problem is, when they want it cleared, you clear it well, and then there is nothing really left to come back in. So it's a cycle, i get new land, i hammer it and we get big numbers, then a season later, it dwindles to 6-12 on a good mooch about. I have pretty much run of as far as the eye can see from my house in all directions, and have some good spots for a mooch about with the dogs. But now i need to look further and further afield for land if i really want to drop on bigs bags easy. I go down as far as sussex and at the momet up as far as shropshire / midlands area. Not everything caught is posted. Quote Link to post

I know most landowners within 50 clicks of home on a first name terms which has enable me to source of the best unshoot hunted ground in oxon wilts berks glous counties. And I worked for a large contractor its get a foot in the door with farmers landowners that others struggle to even get the time of day from. ATB Cookie Quote Link to post
