reddawn 2,173
use your head mate, there is an inbetween, get a young dog out watching an learning, but dont gee it anything too hard, i dont show mine a lamp till they about 6/7 month dependin on the dog an time of year, but i do take pups as young as 10/12 weeks out local to watch a couple of hours ferreting or bushing, but i do tend to base the day around the pup an as soon as it seems to be bored or tired i go home, like i say, do what you think is right its your dog at end of day 2 Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
I used to leave them until at least 8 months old and then let them on to mixi rabbits but never long runs at hares. When i was younger I would take live rabbits I feretted out in to an open field and let the dog chase them. Nine times out of ten the rabbit would get away but it gave the dog a good idea of how to jink and turn with the rabbit. Many people would think this is cruel and I can't really argue with that so I don't do it anymore. Personally I believe a dog loses confidence if let on prey too early and it continually misses them. Greyhound men never let their pups race until at least one year old. why not show them the bunny in the net its folk like you that gee folk a bad name, you take the time to go ferreting but you dont take the pup, instead you release the bunnys for it  1 Quote Link to post

Some breeds such as Deerhounds take much longer to develop and it's therfore advisable to hang fire with such dogs where as some smaller types Beddy x's etc: can often be started much younger if thats your way? paulus 26
the more you can get a pup out and show it, and do mean show it, the better and steadier it will be as it matures, nothing wrong with it hanging around nets, ferrets dead game. the more it encounters other dogs animals the better socialised it will become. being stuck in untill its 8 months will be doing it no favours, as long as you dont put it in a position to knock its confiedence. so take it out Quote Link to post
