I would take live rabbits I feretted out in to an open field and let the dog chase them. Nine times out of ten the rabbit would get away but it gave the dog a good idea of how to jink and turn with the rabbit. Many people would think this is cruel and I can't really argue with that so I don't do it anymore.

Thats called BAITING matey in the eyes of the law..you may well of said you went digging badgers with a terrier!! The LAW classes BOTH no different to the other...you may want to watch how you word things in future? Just a piece of friendly advice and not being an arse...ever heard the phrase "shooting yourself in the foot"? ...well thats a typical example of it? As for when starting a pup...well imo i always say what's the big hurry? Why send a child to do a mans job? ATB Andy.

You missed out part of my quote when I said "when I was younger". I didn't elaborate, perhaps I should have since you raised the issue. I was about 13 or 14 then so at that time out with the reach of criminal responsibility. Plus the fact statute of limitations comes in to play.

I can assure I will never shoot myself in the foot nor would I incriminate myself. I'm far to wily for that.

use your head mate, there is an inbetween, get a young dog out watching an learning, but dont gee it anything too hard, i dont show mine a lamp till they about 6/7 month dependin on the dog an time of

i always take mine out as soon as they have had there first shot out of the two,

I used to leave them until at least 8 months old and then let them on to mixi rabbits but never long runs at hares. When i was younger I would take live rabbits I feretted out in to an open field and let the dog chase them. Personally I believe a dog loses confidence if let on prey too early and it continually misses them.

Greyhound men never let their pups race until at least one year old.

why not show them the bunny in the net  its folk like you that gee folk a bad name, you take the time to go ferreting but you dont take the pup, instead you release the bunnys for it

I would never take a pup out all day feretting, making it walk 10-20 miles at such a young age. Plus the fact it was about 30 years ago.

Think about what you're saying before speaking.

your telling folk to take live bunnys out in fields an drop them for the pups.... even if it does say you was younger, you still said it, in reply to the lad asking for advice, so why dont you think before you speak

as i said mixed opinions, surely starting your dog early can make it more keen? i dont understand why people leave them till there a few months old? quite confusing.

ive brought on 2 pups one i rushed and started at 8 month it done ok but i got shot of this dog as it did not retrieve. next dog did not see the lamp or a rabbit until 14month old he caught 4/5 rabbits first outing and has never really missed much since + he is good recall obedient and retrieves this is because instead of rushing to get him out killing i let him grow up and mature and in this time i taught him all the basics which i has payed off.in my case live and learn and i know for sure the next pup i bring on will not be going out until at least 12month.you have a long time with the dog so get most important things done first.and my dog is as keen as ive seen so no starting early has nothing to do with that.
