the problem is dear whin, people have no idea what the grade means in reality, some think its all to do with taking teeth, horn others 100 rabbits a night others retrieving to hand. the reality is its

I sort of get the point of this thread, (I think) !! If you are in pursuit of the "ultimate" dog, or the "complete allrounder", you are goung to cull an awful lot of dogs, as these mythical beasts don

Most of the wastage is created by idiots who have spurious crosses, either by accident or because they don't understand genetics. The rest of the wastage is created by poor handling and training, lack of patience from the owner that tries to get a dog working too soon. Few seem to realise that a good lurcher is usually in its 3rd year before it really starts to show. Before then there will be signs, sure, but like playing a footballer or rugger player too soon, injuries occur because the joints are not fully formed at 1 year with smaller dogs and even later in bigger ones.

You would have to cull wastage yourself because no vet will euthanise a perfectly fit animal. Some people seem to think they can enlarge their egos and make themselves look "big" or "hard" by taking out their own inadequacies on the poor dog. It is a difficult thing to do. I have done it, one dog broke his neck on a ditch and I had to put him out of his misery there and then. That was a friend's dog. We both sobbed for an hour and couldn't face going home. I had to shoot my bitcg, Gem, she went under a car and was very badly injured. Those were mercy killings but they were none the easier for that. Anyone who thinks they can take a dogs life, just like that, as a solution to what was a breeding or training problem in the first place must be completely devoid of emotion - I would say that would put them in the sphere of having a mental health problem.

it is very unusual that a lurcher wont be good at

some type of hunting if giving a real chance by

a real dog man or woman

So if you don't kill a dog that dosnt make the grade, then it's the anti in you..... What a load of shite some people spout on here.

you know f*****g well what i mean, if you get a dog that you want to kill foxes and when the going gets tough and the dog starts sounding like a hound eg barking its fecking head off n old ging gets away time after time do you keep it as a pet or do you get rid or are you guilty of passing it on telling lies about it instead of giving it an OBE n thats nothing to do with the new years honours list

would like to hear your opinions on the process and who believes that dogs that dont make the grade should be sent to the clouds so that only the best should reproduce just like days of old, its also a way of stopping the puppy farming and how many of you would have the swingers to let your beloved pet go if it was sh1t EG send it on the journey

Topics like this are better discussed between close friends in private.

Just my personal opinion, but puting topics like this on an internet forum comes accross as a bit of an anti tactic.

Again just my opinion.

so your only a proper terrier man if you acquire a dog that dosnt suit your needs you then cave it's head in with a shovel? and that what makes you a proper terrier man?

no vet worth his salt wil put an healthy dog down unless its clased as dangerous. i recall the nazis adopting this kind of method during WW2 and look were that got them.??

there are extreme circumstances were you may have to destroy a dog on the spot serious injury but then and only then if you have the means to do the job as quickly and humanely as possible the subject has been touched on briefly and thats that.

i think some people shouldnt be allowed to keep goldfish let alone a dog and if the numbers of dogs they have had is anything to go by they will get a few good uns its the law of averages kicking in.

its indescriminte breeding thats at fault the quick buck merchants making fantastic claims to the lineage etc the merry go round of dogs that pass through individuals hands.

i have a rescue dog and in twelve months time may decide to aquire another rescue dog as there are plenty out there to choose from from various ages and dont kid yourself there are dogs barely 6 months old dumped and kicked out so it has SFA to do with working ability.

its the people who need culling not the dogs the cretins and braggards who make outlandish claims and bullshitters.

you can achieve great things but only with a great amount of time effort patience and understanding being put in some lurchers take longer to mature than others thats facts some will be allrounders some wont. but the fact is there are far more shite dog owners/breeders than shite dogs out there.

i recall a guyposting many years ago in a mag about the merits of having a white dog and would the farmer see it like some spectre ghosting across the field catching game .?? no it would be the zillion powered lamp frying the farmers face or the car/van carelessly parked that was more likely to draw his attention to your presence.

wise words indeed

I sort of get the point of this thread, (I think) !! If you are in pursuit of the "ultimate" dog, or the "complete allrounder", you are goung to cull an awful lot of dogs, as these mythical beasts don't exist ! Of course, I agree with trying to better your stock, but when do you decide a dog isn't good enough ? I've a bitch in my kennel that was better at five year old, than she was at two; Also, how high do you set your benchmark ? Many people want a dog to mooch about with and take a few rabbit, a companion, while others want a match dog. I think the only answer is; if YOU ARE happy with what you have, then that's all that counts !

Cheers.
