skycat 6,173
Rub down/massage before and after work. I used to use liniment when I went coursing: the strong stuff that gets up your nose and cures sinus problems To be honest, I think that the actual massage is more important than a liniment: massage brings blood to the area and loosens up tight muscles before work; and after work it helps to dissipate lactic acid build up and soothe tired muscles. Massaging a tight muscle helps to stave off muscle strain as well. Definitely not shite! Human athletes do the same for the same reasons. 4 Quote Link to post
mintstick999 485
I'm with skycat, always stretch and rub before a race, a lot of others i know don't bother but then they don't win either. My big girl mags had a big dog fox (pre ban of course) straight in the shower when she got home, rub down and tcp on any cuts , she slept all afternoon but right as rain and ready to go again tomorrow. if you think about it all athletes stretch and warm up or cool down after strenuous running it's only common sense really!!!. What really pissed me off was she rolled in fox shit before the hunt so she smelt right!!!!! (only nature really i suppose) 1 Quote Link to post

L8SPORTS 19
Rely important it relaxes the dogs gets rid of nots and like stated gets the blood going threw all the muscles I never done it before a work out but definitely after some of my dogs used to have there eyes half closed and I swear after a while 1 bitch I had would stretch out the leg I was rubbing ha I start from the top of the head 2 hands thumbs in the centre and rub wright down to the back on to the hind legs after a while the dog stands strong so you can push the nots wright out then each leg I some times wear them cafe hygiene gloves its like brushing them at the same time' when they see the gloves tails start to go ha Defo a must if the dogs been worked hard Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,812
Used to allways rub the Whippets down with a towel, before and after a race. Not so much with the Lurchers, as they usualy have a walk and a stretch before running. Running a dog "cold" is asking for muscle injuries, so a rub down or a stretch before running is reccomended. Cheers. Edited January 8, 2012 by chartpolski Quote Link to post
boyo 1,398
always done it with the greyhounds and do it now with the lurchers i use green oils same as curaco but also keep a tub of trainers choice in stock this is real top stuff if your dog as a niggle or muscle tear also manipulate them and stretch all over they love it after a while . Lab 10,979
Used to watch my Dad rub down the greyhounds after every race in the kitchen. Feet in the basin and nails and pads all cleaned to wash out any sand or dirt. Then a quick rub down and into the kennel. He used to rub on some stuff in a bottle that stunk to high heaven before races. Sitting in the car on the way you felt a bit high.... Quote Link to post
