mackay 3,450
No I think at the end of the day the obedience required, IE sit, stay, blind stay, heel, retrieve, jump, recall is pretty much all that is required. Problem being people were owning collie crosses, training them to this standard (which is commendable although not taxing) competing at a local show against little competition and next thing heyho they're representing their country in the final often with a dog (and in many cases owner) with no hunting experience. I'm a fan of obedience and as I said earlier the field trials had good intentions but at the end of the day obedience should enhance and compliment lurcher work. Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
aye if trials were to be held again and a good number entered it could be a success, like you say maybe not worth it, a bit hit or miss, I wouldn,t disregard it altogether though Quote Link to post

whin 463
to much collie in adog is a bad thing a quart is all you need , no more , the problem with obeidence trails the people who ran it were not the best hunters there self but had accses to the land ,through a third party who stayed there , been at them judged them ,but only saw a few dogs i would take home ,obeidence in a daft ring is nothing compaired to the real game in hand pre ban , never will be, it was good fun a weekend away ,but chaseing rabbs is only one part of a good working lurcher command , pre ban ,i rate the true working beardie lurcher alot over the cringing hyper border collies by far , that hancock bred , we move on and there better dogs about nowadays 1 Quote Link to post
fatlad 250
ive had afew collie greys over the years, ive allways prefered a dash of beardy in them makes them more robust and hardy than the border grey. one of the best i had was 5/8 beardy collie she was used mostly for ferreting and bushing up the dales really hardy and fast, she also worked longnets at night i think you need a bit more collie than a qauter if your wanting a good allrounder Quote Link to post

robert michem 314
IM ALL UP FOR WELL TRAINED DOGS... BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE CHAPS IN THE FEILD TRAILS.. THE GUYS NEVER WORKED THE DOGS HARD,, SO MAY BE THEY WAS WELL TRAINED/BUT THEY NEVER GOT TESTED,, TO THE LIMIT,, NITE IN NITE OUT, 50 PLUS RUNS A NITE, THEN GOING ON DEER THEN HARES,,AND I DONT MEAN IN THE FEILD TRAILS ,I MEAN IN EVERY DAY LIFE,,,, Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
My thoughts on this,,, scenario, you have a first x collie grey which you have put the time into training for obediance trials and theres a good chance you would win all day long take the same pup and from day one just give it the basic training and let it find its own feet and theres a good chance it will perform well in the field try and combine the two and it gets shady, I reckon all the obediance training for trials would hinder a first x in the field scenario two,,, If I was and I,m not but I were to try and win some trials I think a 3/4 bred would be the way to go, a 3/4 can still be trained to a high level witout stifling the dog in the field imo ,atb 1 Quote Link to post
