redpat1 225
I am at the stage where I am ready (i think) for my 1st Patterdale, I have been researching and looking around for around 6 months and I am confident I can give it the attention and work it needs. I just want to clear up a few point before I take the plunge. Are they genrally good with kids, it will be in a family environment with my 10 month Deer/Grey X Whip, will it kennel outside ok by its self? Where can I find a descent litter of workers? I dont mind travelling for the right dog. They seem hard to find with proven parentage! Is it worth trying to get a slightly older dog (1-2max) that has seen a bit? as I am still fairly new to this myself. Helpful and constructive advice and opinion welcomed from experienced dogmen. Thanks Pat Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
In general I find most are good with kids secondly where to find a good litters. Well if you keep your ear to the ground so to speak , you'll hear of someone with a litter . Especially if you have a group of friends that dig on a regular basis. If not then it can be a lottery of trawling about . Atb in your search Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
Im on my first "black en", he is kid daft , my 13 yr old walks him and throws a ball about with him. i am having problem with him being noisy as i bought him at 7 mths old from a lad who posts on here, he was kenneled with another dog but is alone in my yard. Im sure a 8 wk old pup would be fine go ahead and do it Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
Thanks guys, really useful. I will get one as soon as I find the right dog, easier said than done though as I just cant find one. Marshman, are you a part of the Kent WTC? I keep meaning to come along but I am usually late home on a Monday. I will try and make one soon though. I take it I wont need to build a run if I dont mind them having full run of the Garden? or am I better off giving them their own area? Keep it coming lads, all info is useful. Pat Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
wouldnt give it full run unless it cant escape, and dog stealing lowlifes . Quote Link to post
Guest busterdog
If your still fairley new to it all then i'de stay away from a well bred terrier of any breeding. If i were you i'de get along to the FMWT meetings and see if anyone will let you tag along. You have to earn the right to a well bred pup, then you'll probably ruin a dozen or so, then after many years of sleepless nights " wondering where it all went wrong " you'll start to learn the in's and out's of the game and things will start to fall into place if your lucky. untill then best of luck and happy hunting. 5 Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
Yes mate I'm the area rep for Kent fmwtc , basically I'm the man you ring if your dog needs rescuing. And you're welcome to come to any of the meetings. 1 Quote Link to post

FightTheBan 1,147
What are you wanting the terrier for? Digging, ratting, rabbiting, pet Only advice I can give is dont buy anything off of here. You will have to sort through a mountain of chaff to get one grain of wheat. ATB FTB 2 Quote Link to post

There does seem to be a lot of shite for sale on here, are the sellers any better in the EDRD? ATB Pat I would say you would have better luck in the EDRD yes but in my mind, I may be wrong, anyone who has to advertise to sell pups...well put it this way I would not take one if you gave it to me. If you have to advertise to sell pups you are going about it all wrong. You would have much better luck finding a decent lad or 2 to tag along with, see their dogs work, help them out for the remainder of the season and see if they would be wiling to give you a pup or put you on to a decent litter. Ideally see the mother and father work and form a judgement yourself. If your worried about them being a pain then I would think twice as that is just the tip of the iceberg. The stress, heartache, hassle, worries and cost of rearing a pup and getting it to an acceptable working standard is part and parcel of the trade and not everyone is cut out for it. What a season digging to someone elses dogs will do is either egnite a spark within you or put you off the idea entirely. I would like to help yo, as im sure many others would to, but I dont know you from adam and you could be another c**t. FTB 3 Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
Its ok FTB, I dont expect anyone to help me out. As for being a C**T, my wife agrees with you Just messing when I said the bit about being a pain, arent all dogs! I will try and get along to my local WTC when I get home early enough. I agree with all your points about a well bred pup but I just dont have the contacts as my mates arent really in to it and think I have gone mental. Pat Quote Link to post
