DogFox123 1,379
It's true! One lad I know as just bred a bullx litter, I asked if the bull was a decent dog. He replied " it's a big un" without their gameness and drive their just any other dog. Saying that the not so good to average bulldogs gameness will be way ahead of other dog breeds except the good old working terriers Quote Link to post
bird 9,984
Most bulldogs over here are fat barrels and even more lurchers are bred from them. My mates litter all were useful animals. My bros dogs intensity and drive is amazing for such a big dog, puts many to shame. The American bulldog over here is a pretty recent craze and true working relatives of dogs over the states will be much nearer generation wise than the working bulldogs that came over here in the 80s. Gameness is so hard to find and it is easily lost. Offcourse if you can find a genuine bulldog to cross to than that is the dog to have most have got a good lump of pit in them anyway, the abd are more of guard dogs in this country than as a hunting dog. A well bred bullxgrey from proven parents you wont go far wrong Quote Link to post
DogFox123 1,379
Agree but makes you laugh with all the youngens walking round with so called bull crosses that are from fat petbulls Quote Link to post

123456 146
Gafer mate there's no point getting a half cross unless your intending to test tenacity and if your dhx's have done you for all these years I'd stick to them. Better the devil you know Quote Link to post
chrisbullx 2,541
A lot people put bullxs down but onlt because they have never seen a proper bullx run & biggest part of them they breed from untested dogs that's why there's so much rubbish about but my opinion you won't get a better x than a bullx if bred from proper grafters they will do it all & the only other x that comes close 2nd is a well bred wheatonx that's my opinion atb cbx Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
The 1st x bull/grey is a dog that as suffered so much from people chucking any old bull to any old grey and therein lies the problem, thats why you hear so much shit spouted about the x. Its the same with anything if you use the best of both then your chances of having a good one are increased, thats why people who have kept this x for years and worked them hard will breed close and selectively, because a "good" half x is a sight to behold. 2 Quote Link to post
blue staffy 145
i'm on my 4th 1st cross now and sadly he is the worst 1 i have had he just not going to make the grade , the other 3 have been good dogs that could run well and turn no problem , laddie was my 1st exelent dog for big stuff but ate rabbits i gave him down to a boy in sunderland who had him until last year when the dog died he would have been 12 or 13 year old , skip was my 2nd 1 again a f1 1st cross got him from wales as a pup he was 24 tts racey with a strong head best dog i have ever owned could catch hares on the lamp exelent rabbit dog and handled the biger stuff no probs would still have him but he was killed in the feild at 8 year old , maggie came next she was 2nd gen out of laddie the 1 i gave down to sunderland and a bitch called coco lost her last year in accident in the feild at just over 2 years old she was shaping up to be another good dog , and now we have diesel been the easiest of them all to train and a pleasure to own but he just don't have it in him he not as fast as the other 3 and can't turn aswell as them also after the cows attacked him while out lamping he can't be trusted with live stock . sorry for the long storry but lets you know how i got on with 1st crosses and to show that there not all 1 trick ponies Quote Link to post
kanigra 110
I've seen plenty half crosses run & owned a couple of decent ones.My opinion is there a dog for a job.The half cross doesn't turn all that well, does suffer with injurys, stamina's ok as long as you give them a breather, good jaw power & gameness, not that fast if its a long run,eat anything, clean& quiet, eager to please, hard as nails, great with people but can be a bit touchy with other dogs(sometimes). All in all there good at what they were originally bred for.Think you have to do what you do with any cross,ie quarry, type of land you run,etc etc & see if they suit. Some people talk very highly of them like there invincible, some think there rubbish. I personally think there limited but arn't all crosses ie you wouldn't buy a beddy whippet for big deer(pre ban of course). I have seen some great dogs with bull in there make up but with other breeds in there aswell better than the half cross.A touch of the right bull in a dogs make up will aid the dog to much will hinder it. At the end of the day bulls arn't running dogs so very much up to the individual. Only one man's opinion before an arguement starts. Good luck & happy hunting. Quote Link to post
