Shoulder injury

Recommended Posts

My saluki x whippets been out of action most of this season with a shoulder injury. It's not obvious how she has done it but seems to be taking a while to heal. It seems to be almost in her armpit on her front leg.. Vet hasn't been a huge help. Have rested her well for 10 weeks, started building her back up, thought she was fit as was running well with my other dog, then first run on a rabbit at the first turn, bang.. Back to square one! Any similar experiences or tips for getting her back to health? Think it's a tendon injury and a pulled pec..

You really need to take the dog to a good greyhound vet or physio: they are the only ones who will tell you what is wrong and how to fix it, if it can be fixed. If a tendon has ruptured, or torn from where it is attached to the bone, then allowing it to heal naturally may give you a muscle which won't work properly if it has been shortened dramatically: each time the dog tries to turn hard it will cause pain and further damage. I can't stress too strongly the importance of seeing a running dog specialist for all soft tissue injuries. Pet vets have no more idea of how to diagnose and treat this type of injury than the average GP. A good GP would refer a human to a specialist physio, but IMO, only an experienced sports physio would really know what they are on about: even the NHS physios at the hospitals aren't bothered if the average person only returns to partial function after such an injury. An athlete, human or canine, needs specialist treatment
