The Duncan 802
I had a very pleasant afternoon out with Paulus today, my last day off work. Gale force winds didn't put us off and we headed out with guns and dog to Pauls local roost where we recce'd for where the pigeons were flighting in to shelter and roost. Woodies were coming in on impressive winds and consequently were 'shifting' like missiles. As a result, Pauls lurcher (with distinguished greying muzzle) had some proper retrieving tasks set him as the speed and height the pigeons were moving at meant that their momentum was carrying them deep into the wood behind us and into some pretty thick undergrowth too. Credit where it is due, Flash (the lurcher) didn't fail on a single bird and not one was the victim of a hard mouth. I can vouch for the latter because I've just breasted them all out. Once again it was great to see a working dog enjoying one of his roles with Paul and I found the whole experience good fun and rewarding - thanks Paulus! The point I wanted to make was how surprised I have been at the idea of a multi-purpose dog. Pauls lurcher certainly does well as a full-on working hunter, day and night, but also as a retriever. So is the lurcher the best all-round hunting dog? Or is Paul simply fortunate with his dog and its breeding? Cheers all, Duncan Ps/edit: results-wise we did pretty well considering how tough the shots were. After a settling in period we both calibrated to them and started hitting more regularly, rarely missing in the last few minutes (always the way!). Shot of the day must go to Paulus very fast high bird quartering 50 yards away, first barrel he poleaxed it - centre of his pattern! I got my first left and right too 1 Quote Link to post
paulus 26
it was a good afternoon, have to admit to being abit rusty at the start but we got there in the end, the dog did work well never missed a beat even the one in the hedge a full field away carnt beat the lurcher for being a jack of all trades, why have dedicated dogs unless your only following one discipline and no i didnt take any photos Quote Link to post
