Thinking of getting 1st lurcher, what to go for?

Hi all,

 

So my brother is after a dog, and he is thinking of getting a lurcher, it will be mainly used for some bushing with my terriers, maybe some lamping, he was thinking along the lines of whippet lurchers as he doesnt want anything too big but wants it to be able to do abit of everything,

 

any ideas? or advise for somebody getting their 1st lurcher?

Beddy/greyhound if it was me for what you want it for get alot around 22tts and can be thrown at anything. Stronger then a whippet awsell. Better skin and coat with most, Heart of lions and put there all into it. Make good day mooching dogs and most arnt afraid of the rough.

Whatever you get, get it early if you can. I would agree witht he Bedlington bit from Mega (above) but my preference is for whippet cross - they bounce well. Whippet crosses look very fragile, but I can assure you they are very strong, nimble and quick.

 

My 9 week old pup nicked a pigeon I put down while I was emptying the car last night - he picked it up and was carrying it around proudly! I wish I had got a picture, it was brilliant. You can't tell him off, he is doing what I want him to do later in life, so how can that be wrong? He did bring it over to me when I encouraged him ("calling him" would be the wrong way to describe it). Plenty of praise and exchanged pigeon for one of his toys - exchange is not robbery! He didn't even worry about the few feathers stuck in his mouth - so I helped him to clear them and he was dandy.

 

Bedlington crosses are very versatile, bushing, lamping, general finding and grabbing what they can type work - but equally will work for a gun and behave properly when needed.

 

My suggestion would be Bedlington, whippet and perhaps a bit of collie in the mix, just for extra trainability - but it can be a fair way back in the line. Bedlington coat is useful - thornproof and resists cuts much better than a softer coat.

Lurcher to lurcher from parents doing alot of rabbiting if you can find it.

 

Failing that a whippet x colliegrey would'nt be a bad dog to start with at all.

most whippet crosses are called pocket rockets not just the crosses you mentioned tha lads after a 1st lurcher a bullx wouldnt be the way to go and a wheaten definatly wouldnt,

a beddyx would be my choice well it was. and like was said they will go in on anything you point em at ANYTHING lol

fair point. but i guarentee the 1st fox that gets away on him cos the dog hasnt the swingers to do the job til th end he will be scaning the papers looking for something that will soon as he gets home. a bed cross is just as mad as the bull n wheaten

its nothing to do with being mad, its gameness. a game beddy will do the same job as a game bull. any dog any x with the minerals to do the job should finish the job if it cant then its shite, i hate it when people say about dogs being hard or mad or whatever. if it isnt game it wont do it,

Beddy whippets are good dogs in there own right but can be limited in bigger fields. I'd prefere going down the beddy/grey line as they have that extra gear then the beddy/whip even tho both will put there all in that extra gear can make things alot easier and get a better chance of having a more versatile dog and even with grey in it you get alot around the 22tts Mark so arnt to big at all.
