there are supposed to be good guards from what i read about them, a couple on here keep them, but like most big breeds might not be that healthy (HD ) + and not long lived.! a well bred GSD is just as good if from good lines .!

the thing is my uncle has 2 rotties and the male is 10ish and female is 6ish and he's wanting another big dog to replace his male rottie when it comes to it.

he's also decided that he'd like to try another breed but would like to know others experiance in them and is doing a bit of research on them before diving in and getting 1.

its not set in stone that this is the breed for him, as he's got a few years or so to find the right dog for him.

he owned a gsd about 15 years ago and it died when it was around 2 i think it was, due to swallowing 1 of them power balls / bouncy balls.

he went and viewed a good amount of litters but none was what he wanted, tried swaying away from the arched back and tried to find a good quaility straight back gsd, after not finding what he wanted he turned to the rottie.

so long story short he has decided not to breed his rotties to keep one back and moved towards finding another breed.

there are very good dogs ,ive had a few ,they are very trainable ,a very good guard dog ,and very very loyal, but there are alot of crossbred dogs out there , so if i was you read up on them or better still go and have a look at some proper ones before you buy

I wouldn't want to be sharing a sofa with one!

I really like them, and considered one this time last year, but decided against it because I just dont need one,

If I had anything worth guarding I'd have one in a flash.

I'm sure J7 is on this site, maybe he'll add to the thread?

I didn't say they were no good as a family guard?

There's only me here to guard, and I do ok looking after myself so didn't really fancy picking up huge turds on the off chance a gang of yardies might come to rural North Wales and try and do me in

If I had a business premises, or a yard full of dogs, or even a family ( :cray: ) then I'd have one.

WXM, I didn't need a guard breed, so I didn't get one, I got a fanny licker instead :tongue2:

I have two Mastiff types mostly Presa and they are very steady. I have them around the public running free and one has had a fair bit of personal protection training including agitation training. I decided the agitation training was a bit much as I wasn't really using the dog in that way but it was good to see the dogs capability.

I must say the Presas have been pretty steady around people, but these dogs have been reared that way.

I think with most dogs you need to find a dog and breeder that knows their stuff, take some advice and go from there. Not all Presa's are the same.
