TWOTWOTHREE 152
Hi & happy new year to all 243 then u have a calibre for all the types of deer/vermin that u shall come across when shooting,I don't shoot deer so 223 was fine.but if I did I would go 243 or maybe a higher calibre. TOP PREDATOR 0
shot placement is everything with anything, however the .243 will serve you well in both the arenas of fox and deer. however looking at the size of the Roe deer, the .223 would also be good and has a ton of different ammos that'll get you from small critters to whitetails, but would rather the heavier bullets on deer that the .243 provides. there is also lighter rounds for varmints with the .243 .22 250 is an outstanding varmint round, but your heavier bullet choice for deer is somewhat limited. the velocity the .22-250 along with the lighter bullets may not give you the deeper penetration on deer that you want or need. overall if i only had 1 choice for both, i'd go with .243 Quote Link to post
shootlodge 145
Put in for 22 r/f & 223 cals, 22r/f for pest & vermin destruction. 223 small deer (scotland) . The 22 rimmy will give you all the practice you need , & every day use, on rabbits etc. Been able to get the 223 for fox & deer & the shot in the right spot @ the right distance using 55gr soft point ammo. They may snub a 243 !! step by step, go for the 243+ cal after 18 month if nessacary Quote Link to post
Simonrees 45
Generally most Police forces don't like issuing a centrefire rifle of any caliber on a First Certificate. If you want a .243 my advice would be to ring them and ask them what they recommend, rather than apply and get turned down. In theory if you can demonstrate a need they cannot turn you down...However in reality it doesn't work like that. Prior to completing my application I rang the FEO and explained to him I wanted .243 for deer and .223 for fox, so should I just apply for a .243. He told me that in order to even consider an application for a .243 on a first ticket they would want to see proof I had completed my DSC1 and booked some stalking. In reality they can't do this but they do. He told me to forget the .243 for the time being and just go for the .223 for Fox and then Providing I'm granted that after I do my DSC1 which I intend to do anyway, to apply for a variation. If I hadn't have called it would have drawn the whole process out much longer than the 10 weeks it took. I got .22, .17 &.223 which I asked for. Oh and make sure you put down moderators for each Caliber you apply for! Edited January 3, 2012 by Simonrees Quote Link to post
