bb89 0
Trying to learn as much as possible about rabbits and hunting before heading out into the field. still got a long way to go before taking on live game but i was wondering, people say to gut the rabbit as soon as possible if youre gonna eat it, so if you field dress it where do you put the rabbit, is it ok to go straight in the game bag, or do you put it in a cooler or what? i know this probably is so obvious to everyone who is experienced.. but i have no idea. tegater 789
Game bag worst place as it can't cool. Leg them and hang them up, or string them over shoulders if still in field. As much air circulation the better, if your going to eat.

Totally agree with this, get the guts out stop the bellies going green.and allow them to cool properly.we used to use salt water for the blood around the wound area, other than that pick the rabbit up leave the guts where it was laid,or throw them in the edge, once done very easy and quick to do,done in seconds I like to keep em separate from other game.but thats just me,ATB Darren
bb89 0
thanks for all the replies. tegater, you would gut them then hang them over your shoulders? (or from a belt i assume would be ok?) i have cooked rabbit from a butcher that i think wasnt gutted soon enough, the smell was disgusting, but i want to eat stuff i have hunted without the fear of being that bad. If ferreting I will hang them up from whatever is available, such as a post, fence, branch etc. If mouching about with a rifle then gut them and carry them in the hand, or any other way were they can hang in the air. Even a couple of rabbits in a game bag, come out too warm after a short time.

The Duncan 802
Squeeze the urine from the bladder, remove the guts (I'm fussy and always do this within a minute or two of shooting them) then hock them and either hang them from a branch or hurdle them onto a branch to carry :
The one 8,475
Piss them straight away if were lamping or get a few bring them home and gut them into plastic buckets to use as fox bait or else just gut them into the last dig of the day

Watch when you cook em if you leave the meat on the bone that can taint them. I always par the meat off them now, If I do that the kids love it, try a curry just replace the chicken with rabbit, beautiful, really is
