Cleanspade 3,322
i wouldnt touch any pup or adult terrier if their are ..strings attatched. having said that i have been gifted pups and the lads know they are well looked after. they also know if they need .the favour returned. it goes without saying. good to see borders put into working homes. on a free. if i was you i'd snap his hand off. and if their are strings attached make sure you can live with them. if you cannot. turn it down Quote Link to post
GarryN 5
I breed litters and people get them free and take pups back from them at a later date, I have done for the last 25 years. The lads that get them are picked by me or people I trust, so your mate must think a lot of you. Good luck Quote Link to post
taz2010 1,297
if ya asking a good friend gives ya a pup of his stock and ya want to know would ya invite him along to watch the dog graft then you cant concider him a good friend so if he is reading this id take the dog back Quote Link to post
paulus 26
im of the veiw once you give something away, thats it , it gone, its no longer your buisness. lads that attach strings normally have something to hide. Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Basically like its been said ,if theres strings attached then its you that has to live with that .To say that once a dog is given away ,thats the end of it isnt entirely true .If you bought the dog then its yours to do what with ,as and when BUT if the dog is gifted then certain things do apply ,unwritten but they are in place most times and should be .Mainly regarding the breeding and or passing the dog on again .These should not be viewed as restraints just safe guards to protect the breeding which takes a mans lifetime in most cases .Any man giving a pup WITHOUT these conditions is suspect in my eyes .. Example -If i gave a pup to a mate and it made the grade proper then i would expect a chat about what to put it to when the time came to breed it .I would give advise on this and between us we would arrive at a match . If the dog didnt make the grade ,was too hard ,too big or any other fault then i would certainly get the say as to its future . If this dog turns out well mate then you owe it to the breeder to see it work .If not then ask his advice .Stick to this and you wont go far wrong or fall out . Just my take on this situation . 3 Quote Link to post

Just my take on this situation . the problem comes when say you come to breed off the pup in future lets say you know of a another dog to put to it to rectify any minnor fault the dog has but its not in the kennel of the lad that gave you the pup? or if you want to use a dog thats better than the ones in the kennel of the lad who gave you the pup would you use the inferior dog of the lad who gave you the pup or the dog you know you should use. far to many problems when dogs come with strings Quote Link to post
dev 226
I gave a young bitch ready to start to a lad a couple of years ago, the bitch has turned out well and is doing her job. Now he has a dog he wants to breed her too but it would not be my choice of dog to use. So he is gonna do the mating and the next time he will let me choose a dog to use on her. This was his idea. I gave the pup with no restrictions or rules. So I appreciated his offer Quote Link to post
Carraghs Gem 1,675
first mating out of my dog was a favour to a mate whos bitch was getting on in years and he wanted a daughter out of her. he gave me a pup back but it didnt suit me so swapped it for some ferrets second mating was to my own bitch, 2pups i kept, 2pups i gave back to the fella i got dog off, 1pup suited him for his own yard, he sold the other as it was too fine headed happy all round. rob84 112
If your taking the pup on just for digging then i would say no, with only the father being tested a little bit, eighteen months to two years is a long time to give the pup the best. bringing it only steadily and to see it fail is just to hard. You need all the luck in your court before you start when you take a young pup on. When you have well tested parents then you stand a good chance of owning a good dog. It does not always happen like this, and there are exceptions. ATB anyway! Rob Quote Link to post
