Ferreting with the English . . . .

Recommended Posts

Decided to head back over to England today, to have a catch up and bit of ferreting with Malc1.

Today there was a bit of a team switch up. My girlfriend is here at the moment, and johnnyboy couldn't make it. So me and the missus had a bit more of a lie in than usual this morning :icon_redface::thumbs: and were away at about quarter past seven, with Finn and 3 of my jills on board. I was a bit unsure about taking finn as he banged his foot the other day (yesterday?) and it was a bit swollen last night, however today he seemed ok, so he went in the car.

After a fair drive with a bacon, sausage and hashbrown roll eaten in the car, we arrived at our destination about just after nine and had a cuppa with malc, his wife lee and their son liam. We then completed the pack with murph the lurcher, lala the terrier and the wee terrier pup bam, a long with rupert and alice, malcs ferrets.

We headed off the short drive to the permission for the day (picking up on route a bonus fourteen year old called rhys), the equestrian centre that we have been hammering pretty hard this season, it was pretty over run, but we have pretty much sorted out the problem. However there are still a few kicking about to give a good days sport

As soon as we arrived the dogs started giving a good mark on the first set, which is a real b*****d and we were hoping to skip, but you have to soldier on don't you! Nets down (during which we realised someone had dumped a load of horse manure under the hedge), and ferrets in. After a bit of bumping, the first rabbit bolted malcs side of the hedge, nicely pursed and held by lala. There was a bit of bumping by me, and then suddenly the horse manure exploded and the fecking rabbit popped out of the ground at high speed, finn dived forward, and i saw his mouth closing around the bunny, and then he tripped over lala  like something from the keystone cops! In the excitment, i didnt see where the bunny went (back to ground or on to the next set or away). We collected up the ferrets and strated picking up the nets, once we were pretty much done, finn started to mark again in the middle of the hedge  So we dropped a ferret back in and a couple of second later a bunny popped out of one of the unetted holes, and down another, followed by the jill, he tried it on more time and found lala latched to his head and then the ferret to his ass. Much easier than nets

We moved onwards, and the dogs put up a rabbit and ran it into the hedge and to ground. We netted up and sent down the ferret, and out popped the bunny into a waiting net.

Up and on, and another mark around a tree and a pile of scrap metal and barbed wire. Nets down, and off trundles old rupert the hob. in rapid style out comes bunny at speed, the net snags on the barbed wire and he hot foots it down the gully with murph thundering after him, finn flying down the field to cut him off, and lala bringing up the rear noisily :tongue2: Quick recce down th gully and finn is saying very positivly that the bunny went in there boss! The last fecking set we did! So back again, nets, hob, rabbit in the same net. Got the little bugger this time, i don't like them getting away.

We wandered on a bit, saw a bunny drop into the mound, and decided that despite all agreeing that we were not going to tackle it under netted etc we would do it. We netted up as best we could and positiond the dogs accordingly. We then dropped all the ferrets in and stood back. The first rabbit fired out one end, turned about and dived back to ground in the net. Im not sure who ended up further down the hole, my girlfriend or finn, but they managd to draw the bunny back out. As i was over dispatching it another bolted where i had been stood, but finn grabbed it. Over back to that one, and another bolts by lee, who doesnt quite get to it in time, despite her best efforts :tongue2: and it disappears down the gully at speed with finn trying to make up the ground. Shortly after this a rabbit flies out of the gully heading toward me stood on top of the mound dogless, so i shout at it like a loon and it shits itself and back nets itself in stead of running off

That was our lot from the mound, so we started taking the nets up, and as we were doing so, finn took himself off up a fence line, across the middle of the field, just as i started to shout him back, a rabbit got up and he was on it, almost taking it as they both slammed into the mound as it went to ground in an unetted hole, Finn was wedged in the hole marking and i was just thinking about putting the nets back down, when rhys spotted the b*****d rabbit disappearing up the hedge, having immediatly sneaked out of a hole at the other end of the mound. f****r.

We continued taking the few remaining nets off, and packing up, and finn went back up the same fence line, as i was watching him, he put up a second rabbit in almost the same place, and was once again on it, the rabbit flew up and onto the mound with finn on its arse, it tried to head for the gully, but he crashd through some branches and other crap and turned it away, back into the field. A few strides later he had it alive in his mouth and was on his way back to me. And then that big gay lumox murph came over, robbed the fecking thing and ran off to malc with it :cray::tongue2: b*****d!

At that point we had eight, and the day was closing, with the rain just starting to hammer down. On route back to the car, we tracked down the rabbit that had earlier skipped the net and bolted him out

Despite my best attempts to convince all present to withstand the rain and encroaching darkness to go and catch bunny number ten, i was shouted down (these English folk are made of softer stuff than us celts) :cray::laugh:

Very wet and bedraggled we headed back to malc and lees for a cuppa and a biccy, and then me and the missus headed home  Another cracking day in outstanding company and a good bit of sport. Also it's satifying to be able to visibly see how successful your eradication of the bunnys in a place is

Today made me think that despite there obviously being a huge number of proper morons and messers on this site, i have met some of the best folk i know through here as well, so you ain't all bad ;)

O yer i forgot batterys for my camera so only a few shit picks until lee sends hers or puts them up.
