Mick C. 229
I like to sometimes have a walk around local and hunt on land that has been visited by most people in the area that do a bit. Seem to get abetter sense of satisfaction if me and the team can winkle one or two out for the pot. its a good test of field craft. If the dogs can find scent we usually stick at it until we suceed Hard rabbits can certainly present a challenge but a very enjoyable one 1 Quote Link to post

There is something as satisfying about going into a woodland with a good dog and finding a little scent about and tracking the bunny half way across the woodland until you track him down to ground and bolt him out as there is about going out to an easy open field set and bolting 20. Mick C. 229
For sure Walked round this morning spent the best part of half a day mooching over hundred and fifty acre farm. Most of the sets had been done. Managed to find three sets that had been overlooked and were occuppied. Im well pleased with about that Quote Link to post

Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
This topic has gone sideways My initial post was about the fact that you can't judge a ferreting teams efficiency just by the bag at the end of the day, that was all. Been on plenty of land that any idiot with a ferret and some nets could walk away with 20-30-40 rabbits, but to be honest it's fairly boring mechanical ferreting. I'd rather hunt the rabbits up and take the dozen instead. Then cookiemuppetandmerlin jumped up telling folk that unless they hit big (ish) numbers then don't bother posting any write ups - as no one wants to read them . . . . . . ? and generally trying to belittle people. Then Whin did his usual. . . . .. 'in my day, when we were feeding the whole village through the harsh winter of 1806, i was catching more rabbits than anyone has ever, cos i'm the best, but i'm also too 'real' to tell anyone about it, or share any photos / stories. But just remember i am the real deal and none of yous are!' Got to love THL - where everything becomes a cock measuring contest. Enjoy your hunting chaps, that's meant to be why we do it. At which point in any of my posts do I say catching big.biggish numbers and unless they catch dont bother posting I enjoying readiing all threads link to ferretting. It is you who is trying to belittle me along with others if you going to quote what you think my thoughts are please get them write. ATB Cookie Quote Link to post
Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
Cookie its not always about numbers, some lads and myself included in that don't feel the need to come on after every day out posting trip reports. Where you not harking on about how many thousand pigeons you have shot this year as well? People aren't interested mate. Look for a pat on the back elsewhere because the lads on here won't blow smoke up your ass. Ls Agree its not about numbers it about enjoyment of the company and day working animals . I not blowing my trumpet just saying what I catch shoot and no I dont post ever day out either just some of my days. If it rubs you up the wrong way and other shame but thats life . moley 115
it ain,t as simple as the ground holding vast numbers of rabbits will guarantee vast bags, there were a good few gangs of ferreters on this estate when i first started,3 seperate lots of lads on 1 big field one sunday morning, some were happy catching 20 rabbits and going home, some wanted as many as possible and got good bags, some wanted good bags and got small bags off areas that could produce good bags, some would catch 6 rabbits and go to the pub, one father and son team would come every sunday morning got 20 odd rabbits off the same field and go home happy, we ended up ferreting the same field as the farmer was complaining, we had a good couple of days(60+ and 50+) even after the sets had bin hit by different gangs, that don,t mean we were better than them , we just wanted to do a better job and have a clean up one of the most enjoyable days i had was with a good mate a few years back, 2 men 2 dogs 2 ferrets, 10 rabbits and we worked hard for everyone of them in woodland and brambles, i have had much much bigger bags and enjoyed it less, its only a numbers game if you want the numbers or have to catch the numbers, if you do want the numbers then you may well have to travel Quote Link to post

ATB Cookie Maybe it's just me, but a lot of your posts earlier in this topic and in others have come across as fairly arrogant and condescending. Maybe i read it wrong and it's all in jest. But written humour is often lost in translation. If that's the case however, i apologise. Moley - you hit the nail on the head. What i was trying to say earlier, is that on some land, anyone will catch a good few, whereas other will catch a lot more. On some land the second group will catch a much smaller number but still work hard enough to catch a respectable handful, whereas the first group would be hopelessly lost and walk away with nowt. My best days by far are the ones when the end bag is usually struggling to make double figures, where it's either just me and the dog and a couple of jills, or me and johnnyboy and our wee team, walking the mountain sides, gorse bankings, and thick wooded valleys of our area, really tracking and hunting down the very scattered bunny population, driving them to ground and ferreting them out, the dogs maybe picking up a couple out of cover. Most of us who have done a bit have been to places where the warrens have been 'lined with gold', nice open land sets, maybe 20-40 holes, a dozen bunnies in each. And with any kind of ability, and even without dogs, i would be surprised not to walk away with 40 odd rabbits. I like to look at what is missed, it's perhaps more telling. Quote Link to post
