underdog1985 27
Poacher3161, how bad do you find the variation in lurcher to lurcher of different breeding....any tips cheers Taking into account im after a bitch probably 24inch or less. I have always found lurcher to lurcher bred dogs have better stamina recovery and durability.Their can be a lot of variation in lurcher to lurcher bred types the type i kept for years could be a bit sensitive temprement wise due to collie influence. you expert on first crosses as well other wise you ranting on about lurcher to lurcher all the time dont mean a thing Quote Link to post
canaliculata 28
Acuspell, thankyou very much for that. That was very helpful. What you described is what i ideally want, so around the 21 -22inch, and it is mainly rabbits im after. I did very recently find a good litter of this description, but unfortunately there were only dogs left, which i was still tempted with, if only i had seen it advertised sooner. Im just going to keep looking, fortunately im in no rush. Thanks, canaliculata Quote Link to post

keepitcovert 842
Dont discount saluki blooded dogs ive a saluki whippet that does the job very well, shes taken in excess of 1500 rabbits in her 5 years, great nose on her and intelligent, cold weather dosent bother her, and lightening quick off the mark. Anyway good luck with your choice. Quote Link to post
widowmaker 13
a long dog or sighthound will add the speed,,,( not always granted),,,,but if its for daytime mooching,,,,u want a dog to be able to make the ground up,,,,,some lurchers cant make the ground up,,,them having the aid off a lamp its horses for courses,,,,,,,plls who run the forley cup,,,,run dogs with alot off sighthound,,,hence daytime but thats were the question lies,,,,if ground has a lot off cover and ur only after rabbits and good 1st collie ,grey will do the job,,,,but what if ya want more in the daytime ,,,without aids,,,thats when sighthounds and long dogs come into there own,,,,,deerhound/sulki /grehound /whippet, list goes on do you think rabbits and other quarry run slower on the lamp mate ? at the end of the day the animal is running for its life like these other fools who think if you flash a lamp when a rabbit is going for a hedge it will turn load of shit the only 1 who will change speed is the dog! a rabbit is running for its life ive found the best type lamping dogs are saluki crosses ie coursing bred stock work mine day and night and they do the lot Quote Link to post

And it does work - or at least it has for me for the 35 odd years I have run lurchers. If you shake the lamp the rabbit does get disorientatedmany times. They wil also often sit right in the base of the hedge and lurcher that will dive into the base will often come out with a rabbit that looked as though it had made cover. Quote Link to post

canaliculata 28
Cheers all, Dougall, that looks a lovely dog. Ive always fancied a bit of beddie in a lurcher, something i have yet to try. Its great to see how everybody has there own preferences, some saying a bit of saluki, others...dont touch it. Im going to keep my eyes open and see whats coming up, like i said, im no rush...just trying to make the right decision. Can't wait. Thanks Quote Link to post
