canaliculata 28
Just wondering what would be your choice for a daytime mooching dog. Im hoping to buy a bitch, but dont want anything too big, lets say 24inch and under. Must be good at using its nose and be able of the odd longer run. Have to be quite quick off the mark to catch them around the areas i work...smallish fields. I know worker to worker ect.....but what would be your preferred choice. Cheers Quote Link to post
darbo 4,776
i have seen beddy/whippet/grey and collie/whippet/grey complete the tasks which you describe. Quote Link to post

whip x grey 276
a long dog or sighthound will add the speed,,,( not always granted),,,,but if its for daytime mooching,,,,u want a dog to be able to make the ground up,,,,,some lurchers cant make the ground up,,,them having the aid off a lamp its horses for courses,,,,,,,plls who run the forley cup,,,,run dogs with alot off sighthound,,,hence daytime but thats were the question lies,,,,if ground has a lot off cover and ur only after rabbits and good 1st collie ,grey will do the job,,,,but what if ya want more in the daytime ,,,without aids,,,thats when sighthounds and long dogs come into there own,,,,,deerhound/sulki /grehound /whippet, list goes on Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766
Some thing bred out of lamping dogs to a good coursing line of lurchers. My old bitch bred out of such dogs could adapt to snatching daytime rabbits flushed from cover and pre ban could consistantly catch daytime hares. 1 Quote Link to post
canaliculata 28
Poacher 3161, how is your bed lurcher getting on? Was it bed/whip/grey x whip/grey. I was possibly thinking lurcher to lurcher, but i here there can be a lot of variation size wise....and its making me a bit wary. There was a litter of ...dam collie/grey x collie/grey/saluki.... sire bed/whip, but a lot of variation in the litter, the bitch been the biggest..... i was tempted, its not having such mixed breeding before made me a bit wary, but i thought it might do the job ok. What you think Quote Link to post

Weedy 7
Well there are many things to take into consideration on making a choice of what sort, breed, or line your going to purchase. It's realy down to things like type of ground, where you live for instance, be it a flat in the middle of birmingham or country estate in scotland. Really all these sort of things need thinking about when choosing what you would buy. and all though this is an intresting thread it realy does come down to personal circumstances. What is good for one man isn't nessercarly good for another. So this cross and that cross realy have no importance to how you will live and work your chosen mutt. Yeh sure we all have our preferances but they are what work for us and our situations. Take a long hard think what you want and where you will be using your dog. And work from there. There is enough info on here to provide help in finding the right choice. Good luck Weedy Quote Link to post
