Hi folks,

As the apparent animosity from dogmen towards shooters keeps rearing it's ugly head in here, I am curious to know how many others have rifles/guns as well as dogs.

I know one other really good chap from here who shoots as well as hunts with his dogs but are there any others?

 

And why the bad blood from dogmen towards shooters anyway?

Personally, I argue for all field sports and vote in favour of all field sports- united we stand, after all.

I shoot as well as run dogs and the occasional bit of terrier work. No shooting compares to working the dogs for me but i do enjoy a walk out with a gun quite regularly.

 

Dog lads have trouble with shooters because a syndicate will move in with alot of money and buy all the sporting rights which took so long to earn the hard way and then hammer everything with rifles and lamp.

 

Shooters have trouble with dog men because there are a fair few that 'wander' where they like mob handed, running everything and anything, leaving their kills in the nearest dyke and threatening anybody that dare confront them with arson, assualt and criminal damage.

 

There's no reason why both can't get on or at the least tollerate each other but it is the way it is. I'm no angel but i try to see it from both sides and enjoy what both sides has to offer.

i use my dog and have rifles as well, infact i do most all types of hunting.

 

the rifles have taken a back seat since the dogs came of age and started to graft. i keep my rifle as i have some permission that i carnt use the dog on but that is about the only time i pick up the rifle nower days.

 

its alot more sport running the dog, if the bunny gets away its deserves to get away, i get more enjoyment from watching the dog do his best, as long as he tries im happy even if he dont come back with his quarry.

 

using the rifle is alot more clinical, when i put the x hair on a bunnys head at anything up to yards, its dead end of. not much excitement there once youve done it a few 1000 times over the years.

 

only time i use my rifle now is when i have to do some pest control and make a dent in the numbers quickly.

dogs all the way, used to use a rifle but found out running the dogs is a better game. gives the quarry a chance and isnt always the same. but thats just my opinion. i just dont like it when rifle men shoot high numbers (greedy). but that can happen on both sides

I started off shooting and now work dogs, enjoy it much more. I have nothing against anyone and take them as individuals but there have been times a certain shooter on here has said enough to let the dogmen know to him we are scum. If I thought all shooters felt that way I wouldn't want anything to do with them.

daytime regular with the shotgun and lurchers. dogs carnt catch what flies over your head but can retrive as well as hunt and flush, mine are as happy working to the gun as they are the lamp if im out with the rifle especially in woodland i always take a lurcher to retrieve, i believe a lot of this lurcherman/shooter crap is historical

i work lurchers terriers and fly hawks but also do a lot of shooting with shotguns a .17 and a .243.

Lurchers all the way av used rifles and dot get the enjoyment as I would a dog up the games ass there's nothing better than a dog you brought up as a pup chasing game you can see all your hard work and every thing else you put into the pup but that's me ;-)

for a start i have shot guns as well as dogs. i use dogs to flush to guns sometimes when needed. killing range of 30 - 40 yds depending on type of quarry or birds etc. i have no issues with rifle men who need to do a job. as long as the job is done and client is happy. fair enough. i do have issues with people coming on bragging how many foxes they shot with a rifle this season. and how they call it sport is beyond me , i call sport a percentage of chance the quarry has of getting away and shooting game with rifles at night using night vision etc etc , shooting at far distances doesnt come to me as giving your quarry a sporting chance. dont get me wrong needs must in certain circumstances and there shouldnt be no suffering with the technology in the rifle world this modern day. i believe in conservation what gets away from the dogs will fight another day but what gets away from rifles? i dont want to argue on here this is just my believe. because the wrong people get hold of rifles and because its the lazy and easiest way of killing a wild animal they get trigger happy, not shooting to conserve nature but to exstinct there chosen coney. its an easy way of killing animals and can be destructive to a devastating exstent in areas of permission. i think after a while the riflemen get so board of hiding behind scopes and a trigger the next thing for them to get there kick is the numbers they get. and that they get greedy shooting unnecessary just to add to there tally instead of shooting to control numbers. when customers want jobs done you show them what you get but only a fool would wipe out there future. and i think with rifles its very easy to wipe out areas rather than controlling them. pre ban hunting with your local pack you know the areas that the rifle boys do as parts of country dont hold much, at least hunting with dogs the strong healthy quarry most often live . when looking through a scope at night you cant defy healthy coney at distances. look at the state the ban has left us in . if rifles were used moderately i wouldnt have a problem but sadly there not. i wish all hunters a good second half of the season especially the ones who get as much pleasure seeing there vermin escape

I shoot but not very much anymore I would rather run the dogs any day but I sometimes take a gun with me incase I have to shoot bigger stuff for the dogs to retrieve, I still enjoy pest control around farm buildings with the air rifle but rarely get time anymore atb nasher.

I shoot shotguns and rifles. My dog is always with me. I guess that over the years I've taken equal amounts of foxes with dogs and rifles. I've shot loads more bunnies than I've ran, but I've run loads! I don't care how someone does their own fieldsport and support everyone who's out doing a bit, regardless of their chosen discipline. It's not about being sporting for me, I can be sporting with my rifle, shotgun and dog. Although a dog slipped onto a field with multiple targets in makes it's own mind up about which one to take and doesn't choose dependant on age, sex, etc. It's a lit easier for someone to get hold of a dog than a rifle and idiots will always be idiots no matter what tool they have to use. As someone else said, unity is the only way forward.

You don,t have to look far to find the reason,s behind some of the animosity between different hunting factions,its best to respect anothers choice of hunting lifestyle,there will be a difference of opinion now and then,if you can,t live with that its best to stay at home.
