Collie X Whippet problems.

Hi there.

As I'm writing this I'm trying to feeds Spaniels so I appoligise for any spelling mishaps.

Before I start I'm writing this for a mate of mine I'm not into the whole running dog thing like I said I'm a spaniel man.

 

Right the problem is that like the title states my mate has a Collie X Whippet. She's 8 months old and she basically does what she wants when she wants. She knows commands like SIT but will only do it if you have something she wants! (e.g.) food.

We do take her out ferreting and that but still will not listen and for the last few outings has remained teathered up due to not listening. It's not all bad she does mark hole in warrens and does chase rabbits down when bolted by a ferrets.

To me personally the dog seems to be quite nervous and when you walk up to her she runs off.

She also yaps when chasing a rabbit down and moans when teathered up or left in her own and doesnt stop until she gets what she wants in the way of being let loose to do what she wants.

My mate is at his whits end with this dog.

Please help any advice on what to do with her will be greatly receved.

No funny comments please I no nothing about running dogs like I said I'm not into them I'm just trying to help a friend in need.

It's still a puppy ! Been started to soon by the sounds of it. Probably frustrated chasing rabbits it can't catch, so it's opening up! Give the dog a chance; back to basics and try her again in September.

Go back to basics , positive re enforcement would be a start if the dog is nervous , id leave off workin it 4 few months if yappin while runnin give it chance to mentaly mature and get training down atb

Yes give it a break and have some one on one time somewhere everytime it comes stroke her tell her she's good..

 

you need one to one with some dogs because they sometimes dont listen and follow the other dogs rather than listening to you so spend some time and make friends it will be fine then.

agree with previous comments pup been started to early its adown side ofthe 1st cross collie/whippet or greyhound.go back to basics gain dogs confidence and let the pup be a pup the longer you can hold back the better things will turn out later and remember you have years ahead of you not a few months.i have owned 1crosses and if you get it right you wont be dissapointed they make cracking little rabbit/ratting dogs

Everything should still be a game for it at that age sounds like your asking to much of the dog n its getting stressed not knowing what its meant to do properly stop pushing it I know its tempting but go back to square 1 like people have said n u might rescue the situation atb anyway

Has your friend ever owned, or more importantly, trained a dog before? Sounds like he is asking for too much too soon.

sounds like you f****d the wee whippet colie up , collies and whippets can be atrouis yelpers on game if entred young ,if she keeps at it after a rest etc get aproper runnning type dog of working parents , a yelper is apain in the ass scaring game away at nite alot of whippets and there crosses are to hyper as they have terier mentaliy at times which is no good for a working lurcher , yoiu need a dog with a calm head and a good owner to boot ,

Collie x's can be the funniest temperaments out the lot. they pick up bad traits as easy as good traits so there not a hard dog to ruin with inexperience but with experience an easy dog to train Well. Out of interest how much collie is in the dog. I would hold back from chasing quarry for a while. get the dog to like and trust you and most of all listen, then go to complete basics in the field. Then when you have a dog that behaves and has matured a little enter him to quarry again
