Random Accidents

Recommended Posts

We read lots of stories on here about dogs having run in's with barbed wire, traffic accidents etc ... but has anyone ever been out with their dog, had an accident and walked away thinking wtf?

Found myself childless for a few hours this afternoon. Loaded up the flask with coffee and headed out with the dogs. I didn't fancy the farm today - fields are well boggy - so I chose to go through a wood that runs along the back of it next to the River Calder. Sat on a tree root, had a brew, watched the river for a while, nothing but the sound of the water, the wind and the dogs rooting in the cover. Blissful. Carried on after a while, picking my way along a muddy track, when I got to a difficult spot. There used to be a wooden bridge there but a lot of the hillside has dropped away. A part of the bridge now sits at an angle, pointing down to the rocks and river below. If you're careful, it's not really a big deal.

Got half way across, the whippet skipped ahead, jumped over a little beck, scrambled up the hill a bit ... and then slipped on a piece of the bridge. It was like slow motion ... as I watched his leg slip between two planks of the bridge. His hock got firmly wedged, and since he was pointing downwards he couldn't get a grip with his feet to stop gravity. Never heard a dog scream like that. I got to him, but couldn't stand up straight due to the angle and the fecking mud. I grabbed hold of his collar and in a panic I yanked him upwards. Only served to wedge the poor fecker in even more. Got bitten for the privilege.

So there I am on a steep slope in the woods, got the dog by the collar, hanging onto the fence behind me so I don't drop down the hill thinking - now what? I'm in the middle of nowhere. I thought 'if I ever get him out of here the emergency vet bill will be the death of me'

Thank God for the farmer, 'cause she heard him screaming and came all the way over to see what the bother was. Never been so relieved to see a person in my life. She'd brought a lad with her and he managed to pull one of the planks aside enough so I could get the dog's leg out. I let go of his collar to steady myself and the b@stard walked away down the path like nothing had happened :icon_eek: Farmer calmly said 'you'd never imagine him getting stuck like that would you' and strolled off to the sound of my profuse thank yous

I was so freaked out I was struggling not to be sick :bad::icon_redface:

It was sheer luck the farmer was there to help (she's a gem). I came away with a sore back and a few bruises where the dog bit me (I was saved from real damage by my hoodie and coat). But the whippet seems fine, no limping or owt.

Nice way to spend my afternoon off

Yes....the day i ran my Grandads black lab Cody over in the rearing field...... :icon_eek:

She was an old bitch and at that time the dogs got to roam about the place and wander about the rearing field. I was probably about 15 at the time and had been learning to drive in the field and was a pretty decent driver by then so i was allowed to drive his Diahatsu jeep around the field. Well i must have been feeding one day and the dogs were running about. They knew what a vehicle was and knew to keep out the road so you never needed to worry about them....until a rabbit decided to appear in the field that day... :censored:

I just remember driving round the field, a rabbit darted out from behing one of the little sheds followed by Cody, too late to stop on the grass and wallop right over the top off her. To hear her screaming was horrible and to say i shat myself was an understament. I looked under the motor and the back wheel was on her foot. I had to jump back in and move the motor forward. I was never so glad to see her jump up and come running over too me. She was full of panic and probably shock but nothing was broken and i think the soft grass and the hieght of the motor saved her life...... :boogy:

She had a hobble for a few days but lived a good while after that, didnt half make me slow down in the field for a while though

I'm always prepared when i go out alone, always take waterproofed wet and warm kit, spare knife a days food and water and 2 mobiles on different networks.

It's too easy to break an ankle or get stuck to go out unprepared.

The screaming is awful isn't it. I couldn't work out what was best to do, 'cause he wouldn't stop screaming. My adrenaline was pumping, I was trying not to go arse of teakettle down the slope ... I suppose it was good he screamed tho - otherwise we'd still be there and nobody would be the wiser lol
