17 hmr help

Recommended Posts

Happy Christmas to everyone :bye:

Im thinking of getting myself a 17 hmr either new or s/h, not 100% sure on what make but have been looking at CZ.

Seems to be more choice around in the new and s/h market with CZ and I have never heard anyone slag them off.

But what model do I go for 452, 453 etc?, varmint or american ? I want bolt action, wood stock not plastic and threaded to take a moderator.

I've been told that the varmint (heavy barrel) is more accurate than the american but the down side is the they are a bit heavier so a sling is a must when your out and about.

I like the look and feel of the 16" varmint but also whats the pro's and cons with the shorter barrel? is it they are just easier to point from a car? are they less or more accurate or are they just the same as a longer barrel?

Oh and finnaly what about a scope seen some hmr scopes what are they like? or will I be ok with a quality scope somthing like 6-24x50 PA

Well should be enough questions to see you through the new year, look forward to reading all the responses.

Sorry about my spelling.

short version cz 452 is rimfire 16 barrel is more manouvarable in a motor and accuracy is virtually the same if not the same, heavy barrel is ok if your fireing round after round in quick succesion and it will need cleaning before it gets that hot

and as for scopes how bigs your wallet  but you wont go fat wrong with a leopold or a copy even

Don't forget to look at the new 455 thumbhole varmint version which has the straight barrel tube rather than a tapered barrel of the earlier 452/453 .

To be honest there's not much weight difference between the 16 and 20" as the cz hmr is not exactly a heavy rifle. Don't forget a moderator in the set up too.
