It had been another long boring day at work but the weather had been showing promise for the night ahead and the added bonus of shite tv, x factor and such had made my mind up that a trip out was on the cards, I decided I would take the collie cur Roxy with me tonight because the last time I had visited this particular piece of ground I had to make a sharp exit and I thought it much better to have the more experienced wiley dog with me rather than the young whippet. I could rely on this bitch not to feck about if I had to call her in and make haste.

So when I had my tea I fed the two that would be left ( the whippet and the retired sal/grey ) then had a couple of hours on the couch, I sometimes get a bit reluctant to head out when I,ve just woken up and the winds howling and blowing the sleet off the window but after a roll up and a few "when are we gawn" looks from the mutt lying on the chair I get the thermals on and sort the lamp, whistle for Roxy and off we go while the other two are left greeting and doing the wifes head in, I,m also thinking to myself I wish that women of mines would stop saying "watch you don,t get caught " , if and when I do get nabbed it will be her fault lol

I drive the few miles to the next toon , park the car on one of the side streets, a quick dash over the road through the alley and into the first field, the nights perfect, well the type of night I think as perfect, the type of wind that when you take a step forward it blows you two steps back and a smattering of sleet, not enough to kill the beam though, the type of night most sane people are in front of the fire but the type of night I think makes you feel alive,

I flick the lamp on and immediately Roxys straining on the slip, a rabbits sitting out about 30 yrds which then starts to run for safety, the bitch needs no coaching though and she,s off after it kicking up strands of fresh winter wheat as she closes on the fleeing bunny, she lets out her customery yap, something she always does on her first run but not repeated so a habit I can live with, she turns the bunny which then gets a few yards on her but she soon makes up the ground, she turns it again but this time it dives in the hedge, I know its not game over though because I,ve seen this bitch follow them in enough times now to know that the run ain,t finished, she follows it in but I keep the beam on the hedge looking for signs of movement, sure enough the rabbit jumps back out a few feet from where it had entered with Rox right behind, the bunnys now a bit unaware as to where it is and the bitch uses its hesitation to snatch it up, I flick the beam off and she does a lap of honour then live back to hand, bunnys dispatched/ pissed and in the bag, I have a shine around the rest of the field but no other bunnys about, I give the bitch a few taps and tell her "well done " and onto the next field

we make our way 50 yrds up the field edge then through the hedge into the next field, I scan the field with the beam, there,s nothing sitting any distance out and just a single bunny close to the hedge, now this is the type of bunny Roxy sometimes gauges before she decides to run it, when a bunny is sitting just a couple of feet out she waits momentarily to see if its just going to jump into the hedge to safety, something a collie type dog can be guilty of but in all honesty the dogs probably right not to chase these type of bunnys which are lamp shy and know not to hang about, saying this if I had the whippet she would be off without hesitation and may well nail these bunnys but most of the time they,re gone before the dog gets near, anyway the bunny doesn,t dissapear immediately and the bitch is slipped, now she starts showing her real collie style and sets off at a half gallop half stalk type of run, as she closes in to about 30 ft of the bunny she puts the foot down, she is just a few feet away when the rabbit realises somethings up and it makes for the hedge, its too late though and the bitch smothers it just as it hits the first foot of cover, this style of running I find is a joy to watch, the calculated thinking rather than the full steam ahead of the more do or die types I much prefer and is why i love the collie types, any way number two rabbit is in the rucksack and onward we go

Roxy bags a few more that night but its hard going in the strong wind and sticky mud, I notice tonight the hares and the deer are out in numbers but I just give them a nod and bypass them as its not mine or the dogs thing, if only the ban was lifted I may consider a bigger dog, could certainly fill the freezer and they are definately very tempting but theres something satisfying about walking past them to see another day or I should say night

We get home at 1 o,clock and I,m a totally knackered but the dog looks like she could go another few hours, she gets her feet soaked in a basin of salty water, a good rub down with the old towel then has her well earned feed and off to bed for me.

anyways folks merry xmas and may next year bring you many happy hours in the field, awe the best

I took the whippet Cass a wee xmas eve jaunt last night, was out for about an hour and a half and she managed two, she done her first spectacular somersault trying to strike the bunny at full whack but missed and got back up, turned it another twice and managed to snatch it up :toast:

atb
