The Cropsafe Crew Christmas eve outing

Recommended Posts

It was just a couple of days since we were last out but the lads were keen as mustard to get back out there and bash some bunnies.

I had decided to give the chicken farm a go, we did this late last year but it's just amazing how well they recover here. This was a Christmas bonus, that's because it's a dam site easier than most of the land we do mainly grass and a railway banking. We arrived about 8.30am to find a raw wind blowing so we were keen to get going and warm up.

I can honestly say it was reasonably slow the first hour, not what we had expected BUT we knew what this place can hold so we were not too bothered.

The first hour was on a grass banking where the huge warren stretched about 70/80 yards, not too many holes though but it always holds meat. We managed to miss one bolt hole somehow and it was so funny to see the rabbit running round trying to find a hole without a net to run into. Tilly the collie was tethered to a spade while the young collie pup was left loose, as the rabbit bolted Tilly dragged the spade out and almost caught the rabbit but managed to hole it up at the back of the mound, this was it's last mistake.

After the grass banking we moved to the fence and the railway banking, the ground here is like a honey comb and collapses under your feet as you are walking, shows how old these sets are. We managed a few more before deciding it was sarni and drink time, you gotta have a brekkie to keep you going. We counted up on the way to the van and surprisingly we had done 25 in the first 2 hours so it was not that bad considering we were only having half a day today.

After some snap and a drink we got stuck in and things came together nicely, one set produced 10, a Christmas bonus. We wished we could have done a full day but Ray had to get off to Skegness to see his son, it was Christmas eve I suppose. The railway bank was easy work, it always produces and the rabbits are destroying the fence on the farm making it collapse so we are more than welcome here. As the time drew on we knew we would have to leave it unfinished, not something we like to do but it leaves a few breeders for next year. We dropped the guts and lined them up for a picture and were pleasantly surprised with the outcome for half a day. 49 fat bunnies, all were in the peak of health, well before we got there anyway, not a sign of a flea or any signs of mixy. We saved one live for Stevo's allotment as usual these run free and breed on there, nothing wrong with a bit of Christmas spirit.

All in all a good mornings work, and a job well done for the farm, at least it will save them having to fill the holes for the lawn mower.
