Born Hunter 17,837
The shoot was cancelled today due to lack of guns for one reason or another so I decided to take a mooch out with the terrier and auto to see what was what. I was hoping to find a fox in one of the many drains we have but no such luck this time. First job was to check the orchard pen as the squirrels seem to have moved back in force, I managed 3 last sunday but more have been seen since. Two shot from the oak tree near the pen so that was a job well done and hopefully the end of them in there. I wont mention how many shots the first bugger took untill I finally contected. Next job was a mooch around what we call the moat. A couple of coveys of English were put up and a few Pheasants but I wasn't interested in them today. The little dog was working the hedge as we made our way to the pen where there was the possibility of a rat and to my surprise I saw a stoat legging it through the middle of the pen which I managed to 'twang' but not fatally. The little fella had managed to get down one of the rat holes but I could'nt see which. The little black thing proved her worth to me once again by marking the exact spot and digging frantically untill drawing out and despatching the mustelid which although perhaps a grey area in the hunting act it was certainly in the best interests of the injured stoat. Leaving the pen I noticed a freshly killed hen bird....... the stoat??? On examining the kill my guess would be a fox. Sorry, no photo. I finished the morning with a steady walk out to the boundary of the shoot where the terrier bushed a few rabbits for me, managing a brace of the three flushed. I was particularly chuffed with the dog on the last rabbit as it ran on to the next hedge very strongly and to be honest I was convinced it was home free and a clean miss but within seconds my dog was running back over the brow of the hill with a very limp rabbit. That made me smile. Successfull morning.... Edited December 24, 2011 by Born Hunter Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,837
Haha, my lurcher had just been to have a sniff of the game and the terrier is twitchy when other dogs are about with 'her' game. Makes her look moody, lol. 1 Quote Link to post
