3175darren 1,100
Hi I need abit of help understanding a wire haired huingarian vizsla,I have been a round gundogs all my 46 yrs,and trained many, I have not come up against nothing really I cant cure or get around,I have six dogs all good animals, and worth there weight in gold, most at different disciplines, a true joy to be around, However I have been giving a bit of advice to a friend who has a wire haired vizsla,he has a very good little dog very well trained loyal, obedient, a very good little dog,he came to shoot over it last yr, and the dog was gun nervous, something that I seem to be able to get it over, dispite the fact two yrs ago it was catching the cases ejected from a semi automatic, and only seems to be nervous for a short time, Anyway the dog is coming up three yr old but he does not seem to be maturing mentally, he is constantly in pup mode, with breif moments of absolute brilliance,he has had the rifle shot over him very little or no affect, shot gun he slinks off to one side then rejoins and continues, can anyone tell me anything about this breed how long before they mature, thats what I think the issue is,has anyone experienced anything the same, what are there faults or strengths, Quote Link to post
stroller 341
bonny dog, whats he like when other dogs are around and the guns go off? At two he is probably still growing up the larger european breeds are notorious for being slow at maturing it will all probably click in one day. He could be picking up signals from his handler who may be himself anxious of this problem Quote Link to post
3175darren 1,100
The other dogs he just wants to play,he then hits moments of clarity starts to work and uses his nose, when this happens he really is spot on,with the gun he slinks off, then returns with me he is alot better and I will admit shows more signs when the owner is around or involved with the training,if the right comand given at the right moment when he starts to slink, you can stop it happening let him sit for a moment or two, and he sets off like nothings happend at worst slightly edgy more often than not no effect,he partners my short haired pointer well,I think that is because he is a mature working animal with good focus and prey drive, put a imature dog in the mix and the vizsla goes into pup mode, I am adamant at this stage its imaturity, but know nothing of the breed, the dog itself is a stonking dog,and need to get him through this stage,I know there are people out there who are developing this breed over here, and would love their advice, thanks for the reply mate I can relate to what you are saying, good stuff Quote Link to post
ashales 0
Darren i have 2 Wirehaired vizsla's, a 7 year old dog and a bitch who is coming up to 3 ( who is the spitting image of the dog in your picture) The dog has always been very steady, the bitch runs a bit 'hotter' but her nose and movement are perfect but she is taking longer to mature than him, i did know before getting this breed that they can take longer to mature than most breeds and i would say this is the problem you have. Stick with it and you will have a great working dog. If all goes to plan i will have a litter from my pair next year and can expand my picking up team ATB Andy Quote Link to post
PoshPikey 560
That looks more like a slovakian rough haired pointer to me. Get onto the hpr forum.. It's dedicated to this kind of thing Quote Link to post

3175darren 1,100
Well I seem to have made progress with this dog now, last few days,he has retreived his first duck, squirel, peasant, all shot over him,I think the corners turned, no sign of gun shyness as such maybe a minor change,in his body language but that soon disapears, had him pointing deer this morning then shot a pheasant over him, Generally the dog is starting to work well,on his own and confidence is building,I thought I would take time to update the people who replied, thanks for the advice Quote Link to post
stroller 341
good stuff mate he will just get better from now on Quote Link to post
Swampy 147
Lovely looking dog. I've got a smooth haired and he's just coming up to 3. most of my shooting is rough shooting on my own or with my mate who hs an ESS. My dog is absolutely brilliant in this situation and knows that when I'm carrying a gun he's supposed to be working. If I go on a beat with him (no gun) he's the same. However if there are lots of guns around he is extremely nervous and wont leave my side. After a couple of drives he gets better but he's nowhere near as good as when we're on our own. I've blamed this on myself as I've no good experience of training a retriever. He is what he is through his nature not training and makes me look very good. So I don't worry too much about it. He will sit about 2-3 meters away when shooting on the peg and behind me. Whether its because he gets a better view or too close and it hurts his ears I don't know. With regard maturity, Without a gun in hand and out with the kids he 100% puppy. Weird but endearing. Glad you have cracked your problem mnate.Like I said gorgeous looking dog. Best reagrds Swampy not a good teacher ning Quote Link to post
3175darren 1,100
Thats a bonny animal, you are describing this dog to a tee mate its almost like he can cope, with one person shooting but gets anxious,if they are more he works really well one on one,for me I took him back home to the new forrest, last wk to his owner, and while we were walking him with my too dogs,he started to compeat with them, walking maybee 45 yds in front of the front dog then scenting up wind, his work rate has changed he works really slow and deliberate now, theres definately a line between work and play, I took a roe deer, which ended up in the edge of a small river the dog was superb, sent him out he stood and bayed me into the carcase, really well, you would not believe he is a novice he did that bit better than my seasoned pointer, who has been present at many kills, all the gunshy /nervous just dose not ad up so putting it down to maturity, with any look next yr will see him more confident, atb darren ps let me know please if you notice any change in your dog as they are not far apart in age, Quote Link to post
