Recommended Posts

saw some whippet greyhounds good rabbiters but i prefer a bit coat more bone on adog for to be robust as some whipps are real fine ,never used a pure whipp as my soul rabbit dog when i was at the rabbits full time as some days it ws wet cold snow and if your out al day they lose condition smooth coats unles coated like a lab etc

Ive seen some very good whippets over the years. they really can hoover up bolted rabbits. And yes, they can take other game like hares, fox and roe. But personally I have never even been tempted to own one. I really need a bigger type for the stuff I do, but mine will still catch rabbits

Right, i love a good whippet, but would probably say that unless you really like the dog, then a WELL BRED lurcher would probably be a better option, just due to durability. However if you have the right land etc they are ace. And i would say that there are enough good ones that would wipe the floor with a lot of lurchers at daytime hunting.

We hunted with whippets as kids on some formidable places like pit stacks railway sidings and industrial wastelands and these dogs caught rabbits on them and funny enough can never remember them suffering any seriouse injurys.I rate a good working ped type whippet to put rabbits in the bag in tight situations more than i would a big lurcher type.

nowt wrong with whippets i had several that killed hares long time ago ,as long as the slip wasnt too long & in open country they could do the job no probs ,but they suffered in the cold & wet i personally think they needed a jacket on them ,ie bedlington x thats a better x for rabbiting i think

think old darbo will have one of these next. should suit what i do now ferreting and general mooching.

I wouldn,t bother darbo, as you know I have one but I knew what I was getting, when I,m out ferreting on really cold days I reckon i,ll be leaving the wee one in the house and taking the much more hardy collie cur, I don,t think its fair on a thin coated dog standing about for hours on bitterly cold days

They are perfect for rabbits mate.

Lamping,ferreting,mooching about daytime.

Good nose, off the mark pace and stamina..hardy little dogs with big hearts.

Not everyones cup of tea but they suit me and love nothing better than bagging a few bunnys.
