Whats the fecking question?

Or is this just another excuse to say how 'the real deals don't need no internet, they have the best dogs, they do it all, and tor of dartmoored 365 hares, phessies, roe and samos before the rest of us even woke up this morn, on the big stubbles, with d.sleight yadda yadda" :hmm:

I think a lot of lads have kept the same sort throughout but these days some chop and change just because Billy Bullshitter down the road said this x will do that etc.   A lot these days are not pat

far to many people want to make a name for themselves instead of just enjoying it for what it is, a way of life, the enjoyment comes from watching the dog not the owner

I think you get more out of it than you keep telling us Whin.   Yep, EDRD is a cracking mag and before this site I was an avid buyer but on a site such as this you can read just as much good stuff,

I've read it and i still havnt a fecking clue what your asking!

It seems to say - years ago i needed / wanted / expected a dog that could take hare, rabbit, the odd fox, go ferreting and maybe bag some birds. Has this changed?

Well, there has been a ban, making two of those quarry illegal to hunt, so i'm sure that has an impact. But im also sure that ignoring that fact, most folk would like a dog that was capable of taking a range of quarry in a range of ways. Some however would accept a dog that cant do it all, but does enough to make them happy, and other cant accept such a dog, as they must have a dog that can do it all. Perhaps they are the 'real deal' we here so much about?

There's not many dogs which are good at all things: I've been very lucky to have had two dogs which did it all, and well, but I still get as much satisfaction from a good rake about with the pack, through thick cover where the outcome of the hunt is never certain: its the excitement factor of not knowing what will come out, and watching the different types of dogs working as a team.

Actually, the nose dogs are just following scent but the lurchers are working as a team with them LOL

7,927 post you have made as I type this. Now to most thats a lot and though you always speak about getting out, the hours and posts spent on this site, tell a slightly different tale...

Now don't get me wrong Whin, I, like you and others, still get to spend a fair 'ol bit of time on here and still get out enough, like you I live where I can run stuff from my front door BUT I never knock the site, nor bellyache about it, it serves a purpose, my pleasure, thats it...

i think he might mean the dogs(lurchers) that we use today, as to what was yester year. Well to me the dogs ive had and what i was told was a lurcher, have been dogs of fair lump of collie in them to a running dog.And if read some of the poachers , they kept dogs that (wernt) to racey, but looked just collie - mongrels, so they didnt look like greyhounds that farmers or keepers would see. And there quarry was rabbits, deer, and (long net) the hares, so they (didnt) keep over fast running dogs. To days dogs are more of specialist dogs (hare, fox,) that were bred befor tha ban came in, and to be honest i like some of them, i have bull xgrey that could catch rabbits and other quarry if need be . Times change so you go forward you carnt go back .

I like my 'just incase' dogs. I dont give a rats arse if my dogs could do 4 fox, 7 roe in one night or not. I just liked to have the kind of dog where if an opportunity presented itself the dog could cope well. I do not think an 'allrounder' actually exists...well not if you believe what you read on the www :D

Well, I've had a fair few dogs over the last 45 years, some as "allrounders", some brought in for specialised jobs, but the two I have in my kennell just now, are not realy any different to the dogs I had back in the 70's. I still hunt the same game, day and night, using the same methods, although the lamps and batteries have improved a lot ! I've owned just about every "mainstream" cross or purebred, apart from Bull X, and I still get enjoyment out of the "game", weather its lamping, daywalking, ferreting or just mooching !

Cheers.

:hmm: Very interesting....

In my opinion,...taking everything into account,...(and I have been around a long while :D ),...the selectively bred lurchers of today, are a vast improvement on the old style jukels....

Romance and legend all deserve their rightful place in lurcher folklore,..but, ya gotta keep it real.

I am a rabbit hunter,..pure and simple,...(mostly simple,..) but, the dogs that I grew up with, did not have the advantages of the 21st Century, with all the knowledge and information that is on offer.... I feel that with every litter bred, we should endeavour to IMPROVE our stock and move forwards, never backwards.......

Best wishes to all lurchermen,..and lurcher women...

Regards, Chalkwarren...

Chalky, as a devotee of Non-Ped Whippet Racing, I can see your point; they have improved tremendously over the years, and so, no doubt, have Lurchers. I may be looking back thru' Rose Tinted Spectacles, or maybe there was just more game, less rules about back then ! LOL ! My brother asked me how my old dog from the 60's would do now; I said he caught pleanty them, and I don't think the quarry has got any faster since !! LOL !! In the end, it still comes down to animal husbandry, .....a bad dog man can ruin a good dog !!

Cheers.
