some breeds have changed,,,,,deerhounds were plenty,,,pure beddies in my area were plenty now ,,,hens teeth

but what they didnt have then was internet forums,,,,and they did what they did back then,,,and folk on here calling folk twats,,,,it was no diffrent then,,,they were worst rougues lol

younger ones rember older blokes dogs being a one off GREAT,,,,no diffrence from 2day young ones tooken out to watch an old ones dog run ,,,and tell the storys years later

it goes full circle,,,,,,are dogs now better than 30years ago say,,,,in some ways yes,,,,but in some ways no as some greats will always stand out,,,and if ran 2day ,,would cream the best 2day

so when you look back would you not like to think you could see a marked inprovment from were you begane from your first dog or was it the be all and end all ...and the dog for you .. i know a lad that had a dog nothing special and put it to a bitch (pet) and kept a dog and it never got the chance to shine as never of the lead and now will go back to it sire`s sister(thats a pet) so he can have a pup .......this is sad in my book ...at least give the dog a good working life and be worth taking something back... not coz its a pet you carnt be with out

I think a lot of lads have kept the same sort throughout but these days some chop and change just because Billy Bullshitter down the road said this x will do that etc.   A lot these days are not pat

far to many people want to make a name for themselves instead of just enjoying it for what it is, a way of life, the enjoyment comes from watching the dog not the owner

I think you get more out of it than you keep telling us Whin.   Yep, EDRD is a cracking mag and before this site I was an avid buyer but on a site such as this you can read just as much good stuff,

when i look back i see a marked inprovment in running dog breeds,,althou some off the greats wouldnt look out off place 2day

what i have noticed ,,,most 2day are more selective in there breeding,,,,,,,but some off the younger ones 2day who do breed, lack the older guys ( father,s /grand father,s /uncle ,,advise and experance and mistakes )

lurchers ,,,,up here ,,,,some off the pure breeds,,,i,e deerhound and beddie

i work in aberdeen,,,ended up going to dog pound ,,,for a look from a guy at work,,,,,and iam happy to report,,,out off 30 dogs only one lurcher ,,,rest collies /staffie ,alstations,,,

,meaning there,s a big decline in lurchers up north,,,which in away is sad,,,,as up north was a hot bed for hunting and running dogs,,,just goes to show ,when the greyhounds shut up there

now up here ,,,,glasgow /edinburgh and fife are hot beds,,,,,there,s decline in lurchers and running dogs,,,,in england its still going strong

Has anyone ever put blood into a line for it not to have panned out as they hoped and had to outbreed from that cross or went back to the previous blood, if this makes sense?

Makes alot of sense fella ,not all lines nick together has some would like .more soin the 21st centtury plenty of top coursing animals when bred on from have not nicked ,and produced nothing in comparission to the sire and dam . ONE CAN GET AWAY WITH IT MORE SO WITH THE EDIBLEALLROUND TYPES ,with some degree , theyre usually decent at one game or the other. atb bunnys.

Just an answer to your question, and no offence meant....but how many on here actualy have a "line" ? I'd say about 90% or more on here haven't !! I've thought for many years about my own "line", but at the end of the day, not bothered, I can get a well bred pup any time, without trying to go down the Plummer, Handcock, Burrell route ! There are lads who HAVE got their own lines, and certainly don't need to advertise them !

Cheers.

but however ,,,,sire to my bitch did 8.04 down south 32lb early 80,s,,,,at home ran about 8,20,s at club level,,,,,this year most not all 32lbers were running 8.50,60s,,,,very poor year from them,,,but he was a freak

but as lines go,,,,,somtimes lines peak and never the same

but back in the day running dogs were used alot in thatcher years to hunt for tea,,,,i think back then had better feet on whole,,,,but some modern ones i think have excemptional feet for the times they produce

but one lurcher stood out for me back in 80,s ,,,mostly whip/grey might hav had touch off suliki,,,,ive never seen better on daytime rabbits her name was spring,,,,i dont think ill ever see better,,,,i might hav photo off her,,,,,as back then,,,,when taking hares,,,,in photo some guys would add a turnip in photo to prove it was a winter hare,,,,funny thing that,,,,but in most cases veg was seasonal unless ya pay over the odds,,,lol i dont know as i was just kid then lol

I'll try and reword it then, lol, I knew what I wanted to ask in my head but was finding it difficult to put into words, if say you had a saluki/grey and wanted to downsize it and bred it with a whippet only to find that the outcome dog was decent but not quite what you expected, would you then attempt to breed from the saluki/grey again or would you attempt to add something to the saluki/grey/whippet, I'm just using this as an example, hope this makes more sense?

You'd have to decide though first whether the dog was throwing good stuff, if a breeding worked off that dog previously then yes you could go back and try again. It would be frustrating though as you'd either be passing on sub-standard(to you) lurchers or have a lot of culls.

I suppose anybody who's been in the game a while will get "highs and lows" in quality.
