I think a lot of lads have kept the same sort throughout but these days some chop and change just because Billy Bullshitter down the road said this x will do that etc.   A lot these days are not pat

far to many people want to make a name for themselves instead of just enjoying it for what it is, a way of life, the enjoyment comes from watching the dog not the owner

I think you get more out of it than you keep telling us Whin.   Yep, EDRD is a cracking mag and before this site I was an avid buyer but on a site such as this you can read just as much good stuff,

I was taught that the lurcher had to adapt and be able to cope with whatever edible game crossed its path and to do a bit of pest control to boot, not that long ago a lurcher pup was available for a pittence,so the only time a litter was bred was to replace another dog.Now the same pup commands a decent price and certain people see £ signs as soon as a bitch comes into season,to much trash is bred now,not helped by the wider audience created by the internet and the computer experts that sprang up overnight, fancy breeding and bloodlines, the majority of which are mediocre, certain breeds that are more a status symbol than a asset in the field, the mindless minority that are more interested in creating an image for themselves and the dry weather hunters.I believe the image of the lurcher and its owner are tarnished beyond repair,i am heartened now and then when i see a newcomer entering the game who respects their sport and is not unduly swayed by the ignorant few, alas they are not the norm.

People have different preferences in quarry, and they very rarely stray of the road they choose so they keep dogs adapted to dealing with that and that's fine but I'm safe in the knowledge that i could run my dogs an varied species and deal with them accordingly, and that to me is a lurcher,

Very rarely could you ask some one what their dog is and the answer will be lurcher, it's either "bull greyhound" " saluki greyhound" etc always the breed never the lurcher.

A previous poster has said he thinks the image of Lurchers has been "tarnished beyond repair". I don't agree with that. This may be the biggest hunting site on the 'net; but it's small fry in the grand scheme of things. The vast majority of "ordinary people " haven't a clue what a Lurcher is, or what it's used for ! And, it's not just ne're do wells who own Lurchers; I was priviledged to be asked to have a look at two Lurchers that were given to an Arab Sheik, by the Queen, from her Sandringham Kennels. And very nice they were ! Also, I'm sure Princess Anne owns Lurchers; no doubt thru' her Horsey connections, as many horse breeders and racers own Lurchers ! Yes they get a bad name, but that's down to a minority of owners; not the dogs !!

Cheers.

Its always the minority that bring the unwanted attention to the rest of us,hardly a week go,s by when there is a negative story in the press, local and national, about the mindless antics of this small minority.

Depends on what you define as an all rounder....these days most think that has to include fox and deer and thats about it. I was always brought up to believe an all round lurcher took fur & feather worked long nets, gate nets and with ferrets & could work a line and flush game. There are still some folk who work to this standard and as long as they continue to pass this on then there's still hope for the future.

I got the fox bug early on in my career and apart from ferreting I dont think there's anything to touch it. I was never really into taking hares on a regular basis and anything on the big side was always a bonus and a welcome addition to the freezer. Sadly these days I'm confined to bunnys which is fine for me. I don't feel the need to prove anything to anyone or how good my dog is or what the breeding is...truth be told I'm content with what I have now and I can live with that. ATB

I remember saying nice lurcher and she replied it's not a lurcher it's a whippet x collie lol

I remember saying "nice Lurcher, how's it bred" to a guy in Texas, he was most upset, and told me it was a "Chartpolski", a Polish Sight Hound; hence my user name !! LOL !!

there has been an improvement, in the Lurcher of today, the introduction of a bit of Saluki blood, I am talking only on Edible game,

one member asked what we done before Lamps? was to course Hares, Roe deer, and rabbits, great craic, Bullshit was limited, the dog you had done all the talking for you in the field were it all matters, today it seems a lot do there talking through the INTERNET,

but I was out on an Invite,a couple of weeks back, and I saw a young man with a very good bitch, and his mate had a very nice bitch as well, Day light flushing to a gun,
