matt_hooks 188
If the bullet is fired exactly vertically then it comes down to earth with terminal velocity... However... If it is fired at an angle, then the vertical speed is only a component of the overall velocity. The horizontal component isn't affected by gravity. The lower the angle, the higher the initial horizontal speed, and the more energy carried downrange! Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I'm quite amazed that off all the hundreds of millions of centrefire rifles in America, this girl is killed by someone using a muzzle loader. Maybe even black powder. I seem to recall that Mythbusters did a test on one of the salt flats where they fired shots into the air and looked for the holes in the ground and measured the depth into the ground. trappa 518
I thought that virtually anything solid coming down at a distance could kill? Im sure i remember someone saying that something dropped from the eiffel tower could literally go through the skull or is this just a myth? Surely a bullet fired straight up would go higher and therefore be even more dangerous coming down?? or am i talking bollocks?!? lol Quote Link to post

Think sum people just get carried away lol Quote Link to post

Surely a bullet fired straight up would go higher and therefore be even more dangerous coming down?? or am i talking bollocks?!? lol No mate your not talking bollocks but it doesn't matter if the bullet was fired vertically into the air or dropped by hand from the top of the Eiffel tower the bullet will reach terminal velocity and will not be able to exceed this, an earlier post suggested this would be 108mph when it hits the ground. The only way this speed can increase is to reduce drag i.e when a sky diver is falling to earth his terminal velocity is around 130mph if he pulls his arms in like a dart this will increase significantly but he will still reach a terminal velocity in this position, in other words he will not carry on getting faster and faster the higher he is. 3175darren 1,101
I had it beat into me Rifle or air rifle BACKSTOP, BACKSTOP, or no shot, shot guns, sky behind, or ground behind, not hedges and twigs or fog banks, the subject of falling bullets or shot is best avoided, how many people have stood close to a clay shoot, or been hit by falling shot on a pheasant shoot, dont care about the miths its not to be done, first thing I was taught with rifle, never in the air, and I have seen falling shot on a pheasant shoot bring blood, granted only a minor thing, but still shouldnt happen,I recon that report is doggy too, firstly if it was a traditional wagon they have the overhanging roof,It wouldnt suprise me if she has upset somone, Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
I heard of someone who was killed by a tiny pebble which fell from the top of a mountain somewhere and they just happened to be standing at the bottom off this cliff/mountain. Dead instantly. Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,798
Mythbusters actually discovered that was only the case when fired vertical because the bullet destabilized. Anything other than vertical and it still retained enough energy to seriously injure or even kill. surley as long as it reaches its terminal velocity whotever the angle then its energy upon falling to the ground would be the same ?feather and lead ball and all that I believe if a bullet is shot into the air at a velocity with a significant horizontal component then the bullet remains stable in flight (pointy end forward) and so its drag coefficient is minimal. Whereas a bullet fired vertically will destablalise and 'tumble' through the air with a much greater drag coefficient and hence reduced terminal velocity. Quote Link to post
