Anytime between April-August, I am a professional guide and if you want to come fishing for small brook trout, you are more than welcome, free of charge. We can stay at my camp for a few days (check out my web site www.blackbearoutfitters.ca for pictures of my camp and the trout) and we can go troutin'. Bring a friend or two if you want. Hey Northern Lad... I was out with my spear last Thursday and got a couple dozen of the silvery darts. There was only 2-3 inches of ice and about 4 feet of water. The tide was coming in and I didn't notice it reaching the banks of the harbour. Needless to say I had quite a time getting off and even fell through the ice into about 2 feet of water. I should not have been on that thin of ice but I couldn't wait to catch a few smelt for a fry up. Going out tomorrow again as we have had some pretty cold weather here...-15 degress celcius the last 2 days so the ice should be a bit thicker. Quote Link to post
northern lad 2,292
sounds like fun i must get out with the pike rods myself soon, been out ferreting a lot lately.i was surprised no one on here has used smelts as bait.they were massive in the nineties, jesus i sound old. its going to be -1 tonight and frosty in the morning ,cant see there being much ice fishing for smelt in manchester though some years ago i used brook trout as livebait, cant remember where i got them, they were farmed fish about 4-6oz.they had white tips on their fins.wishing you good sport and thick ice yis dave Quote Link to post
northern lad 2,292
i found them a bit soft for wobbling, start breaking up after a few casts i like to pop em up with foam yis dave Quote Link to post
Canadian Black Bears 23
I use smelt all the time it is one of the best baits for pike i thnk I particularly like to use them as a wobbled dead bait my best pike of around 17lbs tooka smelt under a dart float. Ever use them live? In would think they would make a wicked live bait especially for pike. Quote Link to post
Canadian Black Bears 23
Live baiting is prohibited in my area. I buy the smelt in blast frozen packs of half a dozen. Yeah they would be like mush after a couple casts, smelts do not freeze well at all. Speared 3 dozen today and had a fry up to-nite...mmmm, yummy Quote Link to post
