kenny14 656
Like many things, cruelty can be defined in lots of different ways, but I don't see that by calling it 'Culture' it makes it any less barbaric, or necessary. And I don't think that our animal husbandry or other rearing practices can in any way be compared to a slow and very painful death. We've come a long way in just a few thousand years, from the time when Humans were at a very similar level to many of the other animals roaming the planet struggling for survival, but I think in many ways some 'cultures' have moved much slower than others. I've also got to wonder what cooking an animal alive and with it's intestines in, will do for the flavour (I know Snipe are traditionally cooked with their intestines in, but their digestive system is totally different to any Mammal). I think the point some of us are trying to make is that it doesn't matter whether it is cruel or not, one culture should not interfere with another. They have no right and more often than not it causes war. Yes, by our definition it's so barbaric it's incomprehensible but it's non of our business unless it hinders our progress in some way. Do we, in the west, honestly believe we are some kind of universal force of righteousness and fair play? Situations like this really test my moral stance on this but it is my moral stance. I'm sure many other cultures could put across a very compelling argument against many of our practices....... and what would be our responce to that?......... MIND YOUR OWN f*****g BUSINESS! I don't like the Chinese views and practices towards animal welfare and as such I wont support them but who the f**k am I to judge them when I don't even understand their culture?

But were not trying to stop it mate, that would be immpossible. The thread is put up for people to put there feelings over towards it and i really cant understand( unless your part of there culture) how folk can turn there back and not bat an eyelid just because its not in there own back yard. I dont think we do anything in this country(when its done correctly that is) that many other countrys would find repulsive as skinning or cooking something alive?... I dont think we do anything in this country(when its done correctly that is) that many other countrys would find repulsive as skinning or cooking something alive?... It's hard not to pass judgement Lab, but my opinion is it's not right to do so without having a deep understanding of their culture. Many times throughout history we have stuck our noses into other peoples business without fully understanding the situation and years later with deeper experience and understanding in hindsight things would have been done very differently. I'm not denying people voicing an opinion, thats every humans right. My opinion is the Chinese culture (as with many orientals/asians/arabs) does'nt promote much in the way of empathy, welfare or kindness, by my definition they are brutally cruel at times and quite barbaric. If I caught anybody (regardless of cultural background) acting that way in my backyard (Britain) I would be hard pressed not to knock the shit out of them. But in their backyard, it's non of my business and I have no right to judge, especially as I have little understanding of them. It's f*****g difficult for me to say that and mean it, but it is what I beleive and I think most Anthropolgists would agree. Perhaps I'm wrong? Edited to add in the spirit of calm debate.
