8Ft Dig Down to ferret this morning.

went with a mate to one of his permissions this morning..early start,1hours drive and onto the land.

i spotted a nice little 3 hole set with not a lot of cover in the corner of a wood as soon as we got out of truck.

Dog gave a good mark so we slipped nets on em..Dropped my young ferret in and bang ! straight out..rabbit rolled the net and was away with my mates spaniel iin hot pursuit...The rabbit was bright ginger in colour, like one ive never seen wild..it looked like a pet mixture.

So my mate said lets go and have it from next set..I said no way..he said"i want a better look at that little bugger"

so we moved onto next set where spaniel was marking and netted up 4 holes all about 15-20ft apart..i was very dubius after chasing it out once already but he insisted we have a look..in the ferret went and after a bout 5 mins we got the loacator out and it was marking about 12ft down...it was on a slight mound so we cleared the top off and had another look, the best we could get was 8ft down, after clearing all the top cover and a layer of soil.

So we started at it like a pair of gravediggers on a bonus..ended up exactly 8 ft down to the ferret and rabbit balled up..it took us nearly 2 hours to get it out..what a nightmare..LOL.

My mates gonna use it to go towards making a hat..it was the hardest work ive done for a rabbit this year so far.

We then moved on and did a few more little sets, but never really got a good mark til end of day..

My dog disapeared while we were netting up a set that the spaniel had marked..she was over other side of this little wood/copse and she was markin a spot right between 2 holes..she was pointing with one foot up and just staring at the ground in the same spot..she would not come away at all..so we did the set with the spaniel and nothing at all at home..So we had to net the 2 holes my dog was marking like a good un.. we dropped a ferret in and it was rumbling in seconds, but not quite ready to come out..but best bit was the fact that it was excactly where my dog was pointing to in the ground..next thing bang and in the net. sorted.

We moved on and did one last set on a hedge that both dogs gave a good mark on..and that also decided it didnt want to bolt..but it was only 2 foot down in between 2 holes on the hedge.. we located it and as soon as i had got down a couple of spade lengths the ferret showed arse up trying to drag rabbit out by the head..so he was easily exctracted.

A bad day on great land..bu thats how it goes..we ended on 3 with a few aches and pains.
