dai dogs 1,404
was talking to a older guy than myself about training hunting dogs ect. he said that if you train a dog to hunt the dog will never give 100% as the dog is always thinking about how to please its owner. he was talking about obidiance, retrieving, hand signals, ect, basically filling the dogs head full of..... he went on to say ( in more detail than iv put it here) if you let a dog do it for itself ( if its got it in it ) with just the basic recall command it will always give 100% as its doing it to please itself. what you opinions on this? cheers Dai. 1 Quote Link to post
salclalin 240
In my Opinion a Dog must have at Least the Basics.Retrieving/sitting /Staying/Jumping etc or the Dog is only Half the dog it Could be.Dogs are Pack animals and are Subservient to the Alpha Male(The Owner who should be the Alpha Male) So in my Opinion the dog doesn't do anything to please itself.Just my thought on the Subject. jf1970 328
i would have thought, if you have a dog that hunts for itself and not you, then you will start to encounter all sorts of problems, recall and retrieve would go out the window for a start. Quote Link to post
shushycatcher 219
my dogs are mainly for lamping and they seemed to know that when you turn the light off they come back! maybe ive just been lucky! Quote Link to post
Maximus Ferret 2,063
If a dog's got good natural hunting instinct I don't believe that a bit of gentle obedience training is ever going to block it. The only dogs I've seen which pay more attention to their owners than to the hunt have been heavily border collie influenced and maybe a little over forcefully trained. I suppose that's the kind of dog he was thinking about. 1 Quote Link to post

BLACKHEART 61
the basic commands and building a strong bond-giving praise-seem to work for me-and i believe that the dog inturn will give 100%.atb Quote Link to post

bullmastiff 615
Training isn't just to get the dog to do more for you, it's about teaching the dog that you can help them hunt too... Hunting together, not as individuals will always be more effective Same as things like "Castrating will cure aggression problems" Some ideas are best left in the past 1 Quote Link to post
