stroller 341
probably about 8 hours before she goes out working sometimes 12, i only ferret with my dog so she isnt as hard run as a lamping dog but i need her alert and full of energy so any longer than that and i think the dog wouldnt be as effective 1 Quote Link to post

TOMO 27,381
feed a full meal about teatime,, 4-5 pm,,, lamping around from midnight onwards,, the dog has then had 8 hours or so to digest its food. 2 Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,328
I feed my dogs early afternoon and then run them to the hilt on the lamp,a dog takes 9 hours to fully digest it's food so if lamping at 11pm being fed no later than 2pm is fine,i feed them again on returning from lamping then again after lunch so they are fuelled up and raring to go the next night..thats 3 FULL feeds in 24 hours..if you work em hard then they need plenty of fuel lol...ATB Andy. 2 Quote Link to post
the big chief 3,099
feed them after a nights lamping Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
If you know that the dog will have a long hard night out, then it is a good idea to feed a small, high fat, meal in the morning. Feed easy to digest protein half an hour after your return at night, only half the normal meal, then the rest first thing next morning. If the dog has only worked for a couple of hours or so then it is fine to give the full amount of supper that same night when you get in. But like has already been said if the dog is running again the next night then it needs as much digestible fuel as you can get into it in the morning if you are going out early (we often start lamping around 8pm and are back in by midnight on week/work days). Time of feeding depends on the time you go out. 5 Quote Link to post

Yeah, couldn't agree more Skycat..a high fat meal is very important..i tend to feed mine that way throughout the winter months anyway .ATB Andy. Quote Link to post
Acuspell 329
Don't forget to ensure they can drink - hard running will dehydrate a dog very quickly. Sugars and salts in the drink - just like a sports drink for athletes. Running a dog hard is no different ot a long distance athlete competing. Th eold trick of a cup of tea certainly sharpens a dog, but only for a short period. The cafeine enhances the dehydration effect. Edited December 19, 2011 by Acuspell Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
Iv changed my feeding habits for the dogs over the yr or so, I was one that feed them every night last thing before i went bed just incase i went lamping or got a phone call to go, So in thoery the dogs were more or less for 24 hrs every feed, And ya they still run good on it , But started feeding them in the morning now before work and can see there better within them selfs throw doing it this way and a good meal whn i get in from lamping and a feed in the morning as usaual... 1 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
I've never really got how folk think a dog (or any working animal) can be worked to the best of its ability for a long shift, when it hasn't eaten in maybe more than 24 hours???? 1 Quote Link to post
