longy0710 2
Hi I am going to fill out my application for my FAC/SGC certifactes tonight, i have the gun cabinet already, place to store it, land thats has been cleared for the FAC. What i am not certain on is what type of shotgun i should get? I am joining a syndicate with a friend where we have the option to shoot Pheasant/Partridge/Duck. But i know very little about the different types of shotgun (12G/20G/.410/over under/side by side etc) What would you guys recommend? I like the look of the over unders but dont know what size to get it in? I know this sounds like a noob question because it is. i know all about the FAC rifles i am after but shotguns are a slight mystery! Any help is always greatly appreciated Longy Quote Link to post
paulus 26
get yourself to a decent shop and try a load out, you will see for yourself what feels right and the shop should sort out the stock length ect, i would start with a 12g though. Quote Link to post
zx10mike 137
12g over and under, getting one to fit is allways best but if you are on a budget there are plenty of second hand ones to get you started.take someone with you who knows what there on about .if you know little a dealer will sell you crap if your not carefull.whats your budget and were are you? stroller 341
depends on your budget but a bettinsoli over and under is a nice gun, 12g for rough shooting unless you need a lighter gun then a 20g is useful. 410 is fine for bolting rabbits but they dont have the range i shoot using a baikal its the cheaper rough end of the market but i need a gun i can use in the field for ferreting rabbits and rough shooting and if it was a more expensive gun i wouldnt be happy as it gets left on wet grass knocked on gates and fences etc your pocket is your banker as far as guns are concerned Quote Link to post

longy0710 2
Im from Sheffield. Thanks for the quick replies. I'll have about £1000 for 3 guns .17hmr .243 (if granted) 12g shotgun The .243 may well sit on my ticket without getting bought so it will be the .17hmr and shotgun first. Any idea on brands? Upto around £500 will be used mainly for rough shooting and the odd driven day. Quote Link to post
stroller 341
Maybe so but you have less shot and more of a spread over longer ranges even with the magnum cartridges i use a 19g load, so its range is limited even at short ranges you need to be a lot more accurate i use a 410 most wekends for ferreting mainly as its moderated and i work around stables etc and i love the little gun. i have shot pigeon with it but i wouldnt be good enough to shoot woodcock or snipe and anything bigger at range i wouldnt bother just in case the bird was pricked and went on to suffer, i beleive as a rough shoot weapon its use is limited. unless as you mentioned your a very good shot Quote Link to post

John Brown will sort you out at Browns lock stock and barrel ,Hillsborough, and he wont rip you off ,you will get looked after, if your only just filling your forms out ,you will have a good few weeks/months wait for them to be approved, sheffields feo is spot on as well. as far as shotguns are concerned theres loads to choose from ,but like said on earlier post ,get to shop and look at a few. atb pipcock Quote Link to post
