little bit of progress

Recommended Posts

hi all , over the last 2 months my lurchers retrieve has gone completely shite , not retrieving at all ,she is my first lurcher and this has really pissed me of as i have done retrieving work with her from vary early on and she has been prity good , she is about 11 months old now , i cant blame the dog as over the last monh or 2 i have been a bit pre occupied with moving house so put it down to this and adolescence's.

because of this i have been reluctant to take the dog out ferreting or her first time lamping as the 2 rabbits she has caought i had to go get my self which to be honest was a little embarrassing not to mention pissed me off lol

any way the last week or 2 i have been doing some work with her taking her over the field on her own with the dummy and geting no where with her and getting extremely frustrated with it all , then the other day i seen a post in an old thread (think it was skycat) saying about playing tug with a dog to make things a bit more fun for her so thought i would give this a go .

so took the dogs out tonight not to the field but a good long wide tarmac path running near it , i kept my other dog on the lead the hole time and stated with dumm with the pup , played tug for a while lettling her win the dummy 8 times out of ten , and throwing a few yards the other 2 times , and she was trottting off a few yards with it and shaking it about , when ever she went off in front i just stoped still till she came back , and when she went behind i walked on away from her slowly till she came to me, done this for about 15 mins at which point i started to call her in every now and then and she came in the majority of times , carried this on for another 15 mins and she seemed to be really enjoying her self and bringing the dummy in to me to play tug with her , at one point tho she did decide to jump thro the fence and into the field in the dark and ran off, so waited a few seconds give her a call , nothing , im now thinking bollocks gona undo it all , then out she pops thro the fence no dummy , f**k sake a new dummy gone , so told her to go fetch and to my surprise off she went back into the dark field , and back after a few seconds with the dummy , thank f**k for that i thought with loads of praise lol

not a monumental night but progress i think none the less , going to keep this up now for the next week or two and see how she is getting on before going back to retrieving in the big open field again, there are one or two down sides to this tho that she is not to eagar to let the dummy go on command doing this and she started to shake the tits out of it when she had it , which may i think make her hard mouthed but this i can live with

dont now if every thing i am doing is correct or not and if any one has any comments or ideas please tell me , but i thought i would this with you all any way lol

cheers

tho only thing i am worried about is that if i take her out now with her retrieve like this i will reinforce the not retrieving every time she does it , and ill be standing there like a arse while she runs round like and idiot scaring every thing away lol , i have taken her out ferreting and she caught a couple of boulters well , good speed and catch just need to nail this retrieve again

To be honest mate I think she is ready , she has a vary strong pray drive , is fast and vary capable of catching just her regress with her retrieve letting her down , I respect your opinion but manny seem to have success starting at this age , if she doesn't take to it tho I would giv her time to come on before taking her again
