Lee C 55
Hi hope all went well today on hic ups !! Just a quick one I believe that when the weather I cold like this and a bit wet that we all need to look out for wing tip.I dont think it has to be just cold over night that does it. I think if the bird get to wet in the field then they will get cold as would we!!! Also if drying with a hairdryer watch out for Teflon in the dryer as birds are alergic to this and recently a eagle died from this. Hope you got bunnies for the freezer and bird did well. All the best Lee c Edited December 18, 2011 by Lee C Quote Link to post

bobcullen79 1,495
Hey All. Home now... Got off to a bit of a slow start as the bird is still only 23 weeks. The first two slips were a bit half hearted and she didnt make contact. Plus, I didnt want to trust the hawk with my ferrets, so she was flown from the glove. Then the ferrets bolted a rat, which came running towards me,whilst re-setting a net, I shat meself, seeing a hawk fly at me, Im not used to being around big birds with extra sharp bits. Picked up the ferrets and moved on to a fenced off, stand of pine in the middle of a paddock. Bolted the only rabbit at home, which hole hopped. Put the ferret down where the rabbit went, a few seconds later, it bolted. We thought it had gone down another hole, but when I picked up the ferret to go over, it seems the bunny was only hiding in the rhoady bush and it bolted into the open, the hawk came down out of the pine from the previous slip and was on it quick time. Just gutted I didnt see it, as I was in the middle of the bush. Any way, managed 3 rabbits and one to the hawk, making 4. Had a couple of tries on pheasant, but wasnt interested. All in all, a good day was had by all, and everyone including all the animals all made it home happy. Bring on next years youngens, as I plan on getting my own bird. Quote Link to post

All the best Lee c Nah mate, not on the sunny south coast. Only just got a hard frost, which melts away by 11am. Its very mild weather here still. I dont have to worry about the mentioned problems-yet, as its not my bird. I dont have my own bird yet. And, hes a very experianced falconer, with about 46 birds of all species in his yard. Thanks for the heads up tho. Quote Link to post

bobcullen79 1,495
^^^^^^ Its only a young bird mate, it cant be trusted round MY ferrets at the moment, self hunting isnt the problem, however, the bird dropping out of the tree and ruining the rest of my season is. If my mates bird nails just one of my ferrets, Im fecked, cos the 3 Ive got aint enough for the big warrens Ive got. Quote Link to post

Lee C 55
Wing tip odema is when the bird gets frost bite type thing in the top of the wing and basically feathers drop out /don't regrow or tip of wing tip dies, can blister etc. Not nice it can also occur if the bird has a hard strike to the wing tip when flying /loss of blood supply to the wing and the wing dies. It is the time of year when a lot of birds can be lost to this! Good hunting Lee c Quote Link to post
