Was fussing my beddyxwhippet pup just now,and have noticed she has a small lump on the left side of her neck about an inch from her shoulder blade. It feel's about the size of a penny and seem's to be attached to the muscle. She is fine in herself, and doesn't seem bothered by it.She's eight weeks old and had her first jab last tuesday, but they do that in the scruff and not into any muscle, could this be sommat to do with the lump?Phoned the vet and he has said it's non emergency bring her in tomorrow, and a mate reckon's it could be a cyst? She isn't kennelled with my terrier's but i let her in the garden with the youngest terrier and they chase each other and play fight constantly, didn't know whether the terrier might have got a bit rough with her?

Ok mate; " Lump " is probably one of the scaryest words in the modern english language, isn't it? So let's just get that out into the open and cleared away, right?

Dogs are hellishly more prone to a whole range of things that go lump overnight. That's a fact. I'm not a Dog medic, but I've been around a Dog or two for a couple or so years now and I've seen the odd occurrance. Cysts. Fat deposits. Fluid balls. Tissue scars. All sorts. Two of mine presently have things on them that could drive ye hysterical. Only they've had them for years and are perfectly fine ;)

Lump, such as you describe there, on an 8 week pup? Be fair to suggest it's likely just a nip scar, mate. Not a scar in the sense that I have scars on my hands, from open cut wounds. More the simple result of localised and minor tissue damage. If she took a firm pinch, at her age, her little body's going to be so thrusting with anti bodies that her immune system likely would respond in shed loads. Thus a few ruptured blood vessels, eg. could become the site of an epic bit of immune system activity.

Maybe the best way to illustrate this more clearly for ye would actually be an actual cut I have on my finger right now. Whacked myself with a hatchet. Wasn't very clever and didn't look too pretty either. But the wound's dry and closing now. But I have quite a lump on top of what was, effectively, a severed chunk of flesh. See what I'm saying? Tissue damage occassioning rabid immune system response. And, having just pressed my own lump, yes; It feels quite firm but spongey. If I found that under my skin one day I'd shit myself. As it is, I know exactly where it came from and what it's doing there.

I dare say having someone else examine her and tell ye it's 'nothing' will give ye enough mind relief too to make it worth the trip and the cost. Then ye can let out one almighty great sigh of relief and get back on with enjoying ye pup :)

Thank's for the reply Ditch,i was thinking something along them line's,meself, but it's reassuring to here a similar diagnosis.Might give her a week or two and see how she get's on,as she's due back at Dick Turpin's for her second jab then anyhow.Have noticed the terrier nipping her in the same region as the lump,so i'm guessing you are right about tissue damage, stupid thing is when i put the terrier back in the kennel's,the pup sit's at the wire whining for her. Many thank's again mate ;)
