BEARINATOR 2,867
Agree with F.M leave them be for a few more months, so they have the best possible chance of being ready mentally and not just physically Quote Link to post

keep digging 35
normally start mine at 12 months! the ones that wana start then i show them a bit but hold them back till they miture more. i dont like 2 give a young dog 2 much it can ruin them! 18 months their normally ready for it some may disagree but its suited me well. ive had terriers ready an up 4 it at 8 months but i personally think it wouldnt be fair to put that preasure of a dog of that age. Mosby 355
I often wonder about age. I ask every terrierman I talk to about how they start their terriers. Interesting how everybody has a different motto. The way I look at it is, I want there to be no excuse on my part if the dog doesn't cut the mustard. Everything should be played to lead the dog to success. If I start the dog too fast on too hard of game. I have an excuse for why the dog fails in the end. I don't want that. I want to be sure of what I'm working with. 18 months is what I have heard the most from guys who work the dogs single handed. Out here in america with brush hunting alot start them earlier. And alot start them at a year. I ruined a a bitch last year starting her at a year and she got into very bad situations for a young dog. I regret it. I don't want that kind of thing to happen again and set me back in my having good dogs. So as is said patience is a virtue etc. Quote Link to post
MUDD 374
If the line of your dogs in question are famous for starting early, as you have stated. Have the early starters made the grade and still doing the job ? IMO at that age etc I would be looking a few sods over the dog, sure it would be rude not too ! Quote Link to post
