Hi everyone, I've just joined the forum and have been searching through previous topics, gathering information and reading lots of interesting opinions on all things gamekeeping. This year I got the job as keeper for a small private shoot down here on the Devon/Somerset border where we put down 1000 pheasants on a nice range of drives. Anyway, the last shoot we had we ended up with a brace in the bag with what I have narrowed down to being Mycoplasmosis (Bulgy Eye). Does anybody have any experience with this? I've spoken to lots of different people about it and the overriding feeling seems to be "unlucky, just have to keep an eye on it, not a great deal else you can do" sort of thing. Just interested to get a broader spectrum of information on it, any info appreciated! Thanks, Patrick.

Yes, it is a disease that in found in the wild, it is passed from mother to young in many cases and from wild birds to domestic.

It cannot be cured but you can treat the syptoms. Some people say to kill the whole population as once one has it they all have it.

It's like TB, will take out individual birds if they go downhill but you can still eat the rest.

I had turkeys with it.

It is spread from bird to bird by sneezing, and into the drinking water and can also be passed on through the egg.. You can treat it with a medication from the vets which you put into the drinking water..

I would change supplier next year, and have a good look round the game farm you intend to use, especially the laying pens..

If you speak to a few keepers i'll think you'll find (if there truthfull) that theres been a few cases this year reported.I personally think its down to the mild weather if it had been colder all the buds and germs would have been killed off sooner. The eyes bulging are the final stage of the disease but if you catch em earlier they do snicking very similar to having gapes it is treatable.
