INFAMOUS GROUSE

Animal campaigners' fury as shop makes a killing out of sporran

Exclusive by Graham Ogilvy

SCOTLAND'S top sporran makers have outraged animal rights activists by making a £1000 version out of stuffed grouse.

They are being sold by Eagleton to cash in on the tourist market.

Each sporran is adorned with the body of a dead grouse, complete with legs, feet, head and beak.

The wings are pinned back, the innards removed and the remains are stuck to the front of a sporran casing.

They are designed so that the grouse's beak opens and the tongue pops out.

Shop owner Marcus Eagleton made the first grouse sporran and he spent weeks handstitching each individual feather into place.

He has been inundated with orders since putting it on display in his shop window in Perth.

Marcus said: "I've tried to make it look as real as possible.

"The first one took me five weeks to make.

"We have to charge around £1000 for each one because of the amount of work involved.

"It is a first - people admire it and think the work involved is fantastic."

Eagleton also produces sporrans made from seals' skin and fox heads.

But animal rights campaigners have hit out at the manufacturer, who counts US film star Samuel L Jackson among his clients.

John Robbins, of Animal Concern, said: "People wearing these sporrans should be ashamed of themselves.

"You don't need to kill animals to make a sporran, especially when most people only wear them once, at weddings.

"Every day, more animals across Scotland die on the roads than in any other way so to kill them specifically to wear as a sporran is disgusting."

Ross Minett, of Advocates For Animals, said: "It seems like the company is stuck in the dark ages. We need to drag ourselves into the 21st century.

"The idea of flaunting an animal corpse as part of a fashion accessory is hideous and barbaric.

"The issue of sporran-making is one of increasing importance. It is the main use of real fur that is still seen as publicly acceptable.

"We are lobbying the Government to follow the lead of other countries such as Italy, Belgium, USA and Mexico by banning the import of seal skins, which are used often in sporran making.

"We want sporranmakers to start stocking more ethical fake fur alternatives."

An anti wearing a kilt/sorran etc: came up to me in a pub In Glasgow, and said "As a Scot!! he was ashamed and deeply offended because I was wearing my fox mask sporran"?? now!! remember this guy is wearing a kilt?? etc: I told him to feck off! as I found his attitude to traditional highland dress offensive and that he was culturally ignorant :icon_eek: (Animal mask sporrans are the oldest and most traditional type of sporran}

I also got my own back :clapper: by pointing out to the twat!! my sporran (the fox's mask had been shot and never suffered :victory: ) His sporran contrary to mine was dragged from its mother on an ice floe in the Artic circle, clubbed over the head, and most probably skinned while still warm what!! was the prick wearing??? a sporran made from Greenland seal, a feckin sealskin !!! The world is full of ignorant hypocrites
