Beddy/whippet 7 1/2 months

Recommended Posts

Little update on my lurcher pup Mouse. She's 3/4 whippet, 1/4 bedlington, bred in Durham, and she stands 20" tts currently, so she's going to be small. I've been around working beagles and terriers all my life, but this is the first time I've had a lurcher pup to train. I'm hoping she'll be useful on rabbit and rat in the future, but we have a bit of a way to go yet!

She's reliably retrieving fur covered dummies, which is great. She has near 100% delivery to hand indoors, but when we get out into the fields she sometimes gets impatient and spits the dummy/ball out before I can take it from her. I'll work on that in the next few months, but for now I'm just happy that she's enthusiastic about retrieving fur. I breed rabbits for meat, and I've tried her once or twice on a freshly dead rabbit - she's happy to retrieve those for me in the garden too. I've started working on blind retrieves (sending her out to find a dummy which she hasn't seen thrown) and she's excellent in the house and garden but not quite ready for longer distances in the fields.

Her basic obedience is good - she will heel on and off lead, has a solid 'leave it' and recall and a reasonable stay (still a bit iffy around distractions). She will drop to the whistle if she is next to me but we need to work on dropping at a distance. I'd like to teach her the basic gundog distance commands too (go back, left, right, hi-lost, look at me).

She is steady around chickens and we are working on sheep and cats. She has never tried to chase sheep but she has barked at them (in a frightened way) a couple of times. She's calmer now but will need more work before I'd consider her stockbroken.

She's good in the house, although she is a bit of a thief and you have to watch your back when you are preparing food around her! She has a very sweet temperament and responds well to positive training methods. She has two modes; peaceful

Obviously she's still young and still has to go through adolescence, but I'm pleased with her progress so far :). Here are some pictures of her as a younger puppy;

Well done mate. I've got a whippet pup, 7months yesterday. Just getting over a bad leg injury (well 2!). Can't do much with her apart from short walks but been doing a little bit of retrieve with her. She's spot on with that. Think she learned from the lab. 100% retrieve back to hand. Recall is good aswell. Like I said, just got to work with the basics, I can't do

Much more for a while. Your pups looking good mate :thumbs:
