Need your help

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I need some help with distinguishing between the different types of deer you have. Roes and Fallows all seem very small compared to the whitetail deer which we have here. Do they stop growing at a certain age or are they generically small by nature?

I have watched hunting shows of Reds which I believe can have huge horns, trophy horns actually. Does anyone have any pictures of them and a story on how you got it? I know our button bucks (small buck which has not develped any horns other than the bumps on their head) are bigger than the roes and fallows I have been looking at. I posted 2 pictures of mature bucks along with a small 6 pointer and labelled it "Deer Hunting in Nova Scotia, Canada" in the Deer stalking topic if you want to take a peek at what I am talking about.

Don't get me wrong, I am by no means trying to take away from someone's kill of a roe or fallow, but instead, trying to put things in perspective on how big these animals get. I looked at 1 picture of a roe kill and the rifle was longer than the body of the deer? Thanks for any help you can give me

First of all without seeming pendantic we refer to what you call horns as antlers over here, The six species of deer found in our small island are quite small to those compared in Canada.

All the species and discription can be found in detail here on the British Deer Societies web page.

http://www.bds.org.uk/ Look under information and then species every thing you need to know is there.

I should say however that generally all the species of deer are uniform in size in there species but there are exceptions to the rule where certain strains in the gene pool such as roe deer show marked differences in size. also it is also a fact that hill reds are markedly smaller in body weight to those found in forest areas. this is obviously down to the abundence of food present to those that habitat forestery.

Hope this helps a little to understand the british species

Regards

Stuart

Stuart,

Thank you so much for your help. The site you sent me was very informative and really helped me understand the British species of deer.

Best regards and safe hunting
