out with the hound last night, put him on some haretracks and ended up with this little feller up a tree:

its about 2 feet of snow right know so it took 3km to make him tree, according to the garmin astro.

its quite possible the marten was after the same hare as the dog, which makes it all the more interesting.

yeah, a pine marten, its the only type of marten we´ve got, so i only think of it as a marten, sorry about that.

they take their fair share of hares and woodgrouse.

an awesome hunter actually, an old guy i knew who used to track them in the winter told me that he tracked one for a while untill it went up a tree, he was certain it was´nt up the tree, and there where no other trees close enough for the marten to jump over to.

he started circling the area, and 80 yards away he found a freshly killed capercaille and from here the marten tracks started again.

the marten must have latched on to the bird and killed it while flying, pretty impressive.

i have see video's of the martens in the wild an they seem to be pretty amazing animals, how do they catch a hare tho, do they chase/track them down like a stoat would a bunny, or would they take them by surprise :hmm: cant imagine a marten running down a hare, but there again id a never thought a stoat would have tracked a bunny till it caught it :victory:
