There is different strains in both breeds mate and the Springer may speed up as its hunting confidence grows.

Well done in its training so far, you will have a machine by the end of the season.

I'd prefer the dog to sit to flush so it can watch the flight of the bird and mark where it falls for a good seen retrieve. If the dog's already on it's way back to you then it's not concentrating on the bird and it will have to do a much harder blind retrieve.

this is the dogs sixth outen its been keep locked in a garden for last 10 months not hardly ever walked let alone sit when the bird flushes. it ever new what so much freedom is. im only watchin for her instints and work ablitly and for a dog to come out at 14months and out 6 times huntin i think she downin good ive only ad her a week so she come a long way in this sort time and the way ive been shootin with me ole catty they wont be lookin for fallin birds lol

Fair play to you mate, I'm not putting a downer on your achievements. Taking a 14 month old pet dog and getting it to return to you at all let alone while birds are flushing within a week is very impressive. In a shooting environment however, a sit to flush would be preferable. Something to work on perhaps.

Sounds as if she is a natural- hunting well despite being new to the game.

At some stage you will need to get her to stop on the whistle when you can see she is on something- What that does is enable you to keep up with the dog and stay within range of the flush - Best of luck

I am no expert but have a read of this

http://dobbsdogs.com/library/retrievers/rj39.html

Once they understand the hup/sit command you can get them to associate whatever whistle command (eg long loud blast) means hup and the dog sits.

Then get the dog to sit for you to walk away say 20 yards turn and face the dog . Call it to you and give hand up hup whistle blast command when the dog is halfway back. You can vary the distance.

That way you have eye and body language contact with the dog at all times.

When this is firmly learned you can progress to stopping the dog while on a blind dummy retrieve for a direction command and finally when on scent. All little building blocks.

You might need your long line and a rabbit pen then ! Lots of dogs " lose it" on scent/sight but if the building blocks are in place it becomes easier to get them to understand. Best of luck.

I am sure there will be other much better trainers than me along with good advice.
