Tony’s tireless efforts and his work on behalf of the working terrier and terrierwork stretched across several decades. I first met Tony in 1976 at the CLA Game Fair held at Glanusk Park, when along with Bert Gripton, Barry Jones, Dave Ramsden, Alan Johnson, Bo Cartwright and myself (my apologies to others whose names I may have forgotten with the passing of time) he helped man the first ever stand which the Fell & Moorland had ever hosted at a major event of that kind.

He was a man who was able to mix at all levels. He sat on several committees with the old British Fieldsports Society as the working terrier representative and a more dedicated and capable spokesperson we could not have wished for.

In the early 1980’s, when terrierwork faced one of its greatest threats ever, it was Tony along with Peter Atkinson (the then Political Director of the BFSS, later MP for Hexham and a great coursing man) who originally spawned the idea of the National Working Terrier Federation. And it was they, along with Barry Jones the then Chairman of the Fell & Moorland, who brought it to fruition. And when the Federation was formed in 1984 it was Tony who for many years took on the role of its Secretary alongside Barry Jones as Chairman.

Many will remember Tony for his involvement with the Working Terrier Show at the Great Yorkshire Show. It was something he instituted in 1974 and ran for the following 22 years. But I will always remember him as being one of a very small group of people to whom we all owe a great debt of gratitude that we are still able to work our terriers today.

Within the modern day terrier world it’s not often that one comes across men like Tony, so when we do lose one it makes them even more difficult to replace.

R.I.P. Tony - You’ve earned it, that and your spurs too.

any news on the time and place for the funeral

Hi Randolph

Tony's funeral will take place on Monday 19th December, 2:00pm at St Oswald Church, Leathley Lane, Leathley, North Yorkshire, LS21 2JU.

I spoke to Dave R last night, he's aware of the details and has a driver organised. I suspect it will very much be a day of renewing old friendships as well as paying respects. I just hope the weather holds out.

Kindest Regards - Barrie
