Thinking about moving....Oswestry / Welshborders What's it like?

Recommended Posts

We're trying to get away from the armpit of Cheshire which is Stockport....as much as I enjoying living in an expensive shoebox within spitting distance of the local chavs and being surrounded by concrete we're feeling that we fancy a change. It would be nice to be able to take the dog out somewhere where there aren't 200 hundred park mutts per acre of grass and I imagine there are plenty of shooting clubs around there.

I'm lucky enough to work in the oil industry so it doesn't matter where I live, the wife is a primary school teacher and we've got a 5 year old and a 19 year old who should be off to uni fairly soon. We don't want to wait for too many more years as my little one probably wont have any problems fitting in while she is still young. We don't want to be too far from parents friends etc. After looking at rural areas within an hour or so from Manchester I noticed that houses in the Welsh Borders are a fair bit cheaper or at least you get a lot more for your money and it's got me thinking about moving somewhere like that instead of places in Cheshire or the Peaks which are way more expensive.

So if anyone lives either side of the boarder not a million miles from Oswestry I'd be interested in hearing what it's like to live round there and any pros and cons...especially the cons :)

Cheers

Nick

Nik. I was brought up in Shropshire and love going back there to see my parents. It IS the most beautiful county in England, imo. It is also of course where I got my Passion over 40 years ago for ferreting, shooting, hunting and fishing for brookies.

Having said that anywhere down that English Welsh border is fantastic, and the sporting opportunity is great if you can get permission.

Can't say I live there Nik, but I have many friends that live either side of Welshpool/Oswestry way. Within about 10 minutes of Oswestry you can be pretty much as remote as you like.

To the West you have places like Llansantffraid and Llanymynech which are fair sized villages surrounded by hills and things. I'd say they're both not far off 20 minutes away from Oswestry.

my old mom was born in Oswestry, and she always said she was welsh . But i didnt think it was , as it only on the border aint it . Am i right or was my mom right . :hmm: nice place though Oswestry

I think Oswestry's right on the border, so it depends which side of it she was born on.. Anyway, if your mum always said she was Welsh that should be good enough Ray, she obviously knew a good thing when she saw it! :tongue2:

Well I'm sure Oswestry was part of Wales at some point. The amount of Welsh place names over the border says it all. Just a stones throw away from us in Oswestry anyway :)

I concur with Mal, she knew a good thing to shout about :D

Though I'd resurect my old post.

We're still looking for the right house and have to get ours finished and on the market so we're probably a year away realistically. The missus might give up work for a year and then look for something after the move as I think it would be damn near impossible finding her a teaching job and getting the sale/purchase to go through all at the right time. It's obviously a bit risky for us as my job can be sporadic.

I've started looking a bit further afield as well as the English side of the border originally we looked at Oswestry because the missus is a primary school teacher and we believed wrongly that she wouldn't be able to work in a Welsh school.

I'm looking around areas like Llansantffraid, Llanymynech and llanrhaeadr-ym-mochnant as well as on the English side of the border. Since we aren't going to worry about the wife finding work straight off the bat we just need to be sure there are half decent schools nearby especially secondary schools. I imagine the primary schools round those areas are probably very good and our daughter is only 6 but eventually she'll to go to a high school.

I dunno if it is me but why is it every house you find that you like is too expensive :D

We were looking for something with a couple of acres so we can grow veg and have a few animals but houses with that kind of land seem pretty dear...probably because they are desirable for the horse riding folk. I suppose there is the option of renting a few acres somewhere.

Anyone live round those parts have any opinions on the schools?

Also what's the internet speeds like? I need reliable but not necisarily fast internet.

Cheers

Nick

The out skirts of Wrexham ain't bad eaither and have a lot of schools available to your kids and missus, I know of a bungalow just out side chirk with a few acres and the old doll has tried selling it a few times but she is a greedy so and so, has struggled to sell it but on the vine she has been asking people it they would be interested in it and offering swaps (sounding a bit desperate to me) it's on the a5 so great access for Oswestry / chirk / Llangollen, also not too far from the a483 so great access for Wrexham / chester / Oswestry / Shrewsbury and Powys.

100yards from the canal with loads of great walks all around and plenty of quarry.
